They are very good
The 1.4 and 1.7 work perfectly well on my f4 lenses retaining auto focus.
Which lens were you thinking of using one with ?
I've got the 55-300mm VR lens on a Nikon D3100, and as always want that little bit closer. I've no idea if it will work with this lens or if I would need a better lens
I keep reading that the converters are soft, but wasn't sure if this was a teleconverter thing or a canon thing

A 1.4 would basically give me a 420mm lens instead of 300mm and a 1.7 would give me 510mm and a 2.0 would give me 600mm.
Is it best not to be greedy and stick with the 1.7/1.4, will they work on a D3100?

The Nikon TCs will not fit on your lens, the back element will touch. They were designed for Nikon's pro zoom and prime telephoto lenses such as the 70-200 f/2.8 or 300mm f4/f2.8 upwards.
A Kenko Pro DG(X) 1.4 or 2.0 (they don't do a 1.7) will fit but the the results will not be great on the 55-300VR especially the 2.0.
