Hi all , i'm new to this forum so here goes - I would really appreciate your feedback on my dilema between the nikon d3100 and canon 1100d , reviews suggest the easy guide on the nikon would suit an amateur like myself .

Hi and welcome

There are lots of threads on here regarding the pros and cons of both.

Best advice is to try the bodies out for yourself and see which body feels right in your hands, which menu system you prefer and whose layout feels the best / most intuative to you.

Both bodies are good entry models and will work well - it's a very personal choice is photography and what suits one won't suit another.

why is it when I see these post I hear Harry Hill shouting "FIGHT!!!!".

Totally agree with and it is all about how it feels to you and the menu systems. I lost my kit at one stage and contemplated moving to Nikon however I didnt like the menu's so went back to canon but this is a personal choice.

go in to your local camera shop get them to get out both camera's and get them to go through a selection of lenses as well, might as well try different ones while your in the shop even if your not going to buy them, this will mean you have the camera in your hands a bit longer and will get a better feel for the one you like
 
I have access to a free 75 -300 tamron lens from an older canon , presuming this will fit the 1100d should this sway my choice , though there are nikon packages available with 2 lenses

No shouldn't sway your choice.

There are 2 lens kits available for most manufacturers, be careful as its not always cheaper to buy the 2 lens kit. Also be careful as the 2nd lens can be an older one and not the best choice

If you like wearing black and have an evil laugh, then nikon for you.....

Seriously, they are both on par, get what you feel comfy with, look at the accessories etc, there is really very little difference.

Apart from canon being better ...oops sorry.
 
If you have never used either and are open minded regards to menu systems you may as well just toss a coin. You will get used to it once you start using it, it is not as though they are dramatically different and are all aimed at the same users.

Going to a shop and handling the camera thoroughly is essential and that should be why you chose the brand of camera you do. Not the lens set up,as both are very similar. One thing that Canon DO that Nikon don't is when the preview of the photos are viewed Canon display the camera Shutter speed and aperture above the photo so you know what settings where used, on Nikon you have to press another button to do that.:bang:

:agree: At the end of the day it's your money your choice I would highly recommend trying out before you buy then find the best deals online but just be aware of grey imports, if the deal too good to be true it generally is
 
Many thanks , running a small shop myself i prefer to buy at a local shop for the guarantee , service & advice - i value this far more than saving a few pounds
 
A guarantee is a guarantee whether online or in a shop but service and advice is much harder to get.
Some of the shops I have been in (starting with a J) actually gave contradictory advice and so-so service for example.

But if you have a local camera shop where the staff have the expertise and service then great.
