It's a godsend when shooting over 200mm. Never used it on the wide side but I'm guessing it'll be just as good.

I did some very careful tests on Nikon VR. It works. It's good for around three stops.

Just remember it doesn't help if the subject is moving to fast for the shutter speed set.

I always think the following picture helps demonstrate just how good the VR is. This is the 70-200 VR II at 1/5th second!!
