In the manual it says do not turn the camera off or remove the lens while VR is in effect . Does this imply that before turning the camera off you have to switch the vr to off every time you turn the camera off ?

Just that you should switch the camera off. I try to remember but often don't and have never had a problem.

No, it just means don't turn the camera off when the VR is active. In other words don't turn the camera off while you have the shutter button pressed (or any other button which activates VR such as rear button focusing or DOF preview) and the VR switch on the lens is set to on.

In a VR lens there's a floating lens element which is locked into position until VR is activated, such as by pressing the shutter button. When VR is active this element is then free to move. The movement of this element compensates for camera shake and vibrations. When you release the shutter button the element is then locked down again.

If the camera is turned off while the element is free (VR active) it does not get locked down again, and nor is it under control which means it can rattle around. While this unlikely to damage the lens it's not a good state for the lens to be in.

Should you turn off the camera while VR is engaged you can resolve this problem by simply turning the camera back on again as this will cause the element to be locked down again. You can then turn the camera off safely.

Just as a side note, I am pretty sure that "rear button focus" does not activate the VR.

I doubt DOF preview does either, I am sure that it is only active with a half shutter press.

I stand to be corrected, (as I rarely use VR)

I don't think you need to worry much as you'll be hard pushed to turn the camera off with VR active anyway since you'll have your finger on the shutter release it would be really awkward to switch the camera off at the same time.

I'm convinced that this is the case, but as you've sowed doubt into my mind I'm going to test when I get home. I don't often use back button focusing or the DOF preview but when I have I'm sure it's kicked the VR in. That said I'm more than prepared to be proved wrong.

Martyn is 100% right. The only way on Nikon to activate VR is via a shutter half press. The back button focus or DoF button won't do it

I wouldn't think it would make any difference. Btw, what does the DOF button actually do? I have it on my D90 and it doesn't seem to do much...

Well I've just done a quick test on my D7000 with 105VR attached and the DOF button does indeed activate VR. Not tried with BB focusing yet as I'm just on my way to work.

Edit: Hmm, it seems that the nay sayers are using pro bodies. That makes me think that there's a difference in the default settings between the pro and amateur bodies.

It closes the aperture to your F-Stop setting to enable you to see the effective depth of field through the viewfinder as the normal view through the viewfinder is always with the aperture wide open.

hmmmm.........are you sure about that, Nikon themselves say a half press of the shutter is the only way to activate VR. The preview button has no reason to switch VR on

Positive. When pressing the DOF button the lens started hissing (the 105vr's hiss is unmissable in a quiet room), and the image in viewfinder stabilised. I tried this 2 or 3 times, and it was clear that VR was active.

I also found this where somebody is complaining about VR becoming active with BB focusing on the D4, which is interesting, and mirrors what I remember happening when BB focusing on my D7000

I've not tested this with my D90, but to me it's now beginning to seem as if Nikon have changed the VR behaviour with the newer camera models, possibly starting with the D7000.

It is always nice to learn something new

Having managed to locate a VR lens, on my D300 the DOF button does indeed activate VR, however the rear button focus does not.
