Does anyone know if Nikon honour warranties internationally on lenses bought from eBay "authorised resellers"?

Have been thinking about treating myself to a 70-200, and they are a lot cheaper from international sellers.

IIRC yes, the lens warranty is fully international for one year; ie so long as you purchase from an official dealer and its new, you will have the years warranty. Its only the camera itself that has the region specific warranty.

When I've looked into this myself, the answer seems to be no as Nikon Uk will not honour warranties on cameras or lenses from the US or Asia. They do claim on their warranty page that while the camera bodies are not international, the lenses do have an international warranty however:

Nikon Europe offer a warranty service system for products which are sold via it's own distribution channels. If you own a Grey Market product it will have to be returned to the reseller or importer for warranty service. Refer to your reseller for service contact information.

Reading around I did find a few people that could not get a warranty repair in the UK even when they'd bought from an official Nikon supplier such as Adorama in the US. Due to the high price and value of the equipment I decided to avoid any potential headaches and bought in the UK instead.

Having just purchased a Nikon 3100 kit I followed their instructions on the label affixed to the box. I cannot get any joy on line to Nikon for the second years warrenty. Some avice please.

You wont get it, as said grey imports aren't covered by Nikon warranty, the warranty rests with the seller only.

If it had one of the UK 2 Warranty stickers on the box, it's doubtful it's a grey import surely?

Thanks for the replies. So it appears a saving comes with a cost. Will have to give this one some more thought before buying, I think.

Out of interest, has anyone bought from DigitalRev, a poster on here? How do they handle the warranty issues? EDIT - scratch that, although they have posted here, i confused them with DigitalDepot.

This additional "manufacturer's" warranty is little more than another attempt by the camera manufacturers to keep the prices of their products at an artificially high level in the UK.

If you buy an item from an official retailer in the UK you normally will get a 1 year warranty. You also have additional cover under the Sale of Goods Act (NO ! it isn't a 6 year warranty - and there isn't a "secret" EU Law giving a two year warranty )
If an item is going to fail it is highly likely to fail within its first year - usually very early on.

By Demonising "grey imports", and refusing to honour additional warranties on them, the manufacturers are in effect trying to make the customer pay their inflated prices for an extra year's warranty - which they are very unlikely to be called upon to honour.
If you believe that the "grey importer" is a reputable UK based business, I see no reason why you shouldn't deal with them - if you are nervous, you can always consider using some of your saving to buy an insurance/warranty from a third party.
It might even be worth doing this with an imported item where exercising your legal rights on a failed item may be difficult.

The dealer *must* be a Nikon authorised dealer, and you'd need an official dealer invoice with your name and address on it - for example in the USA, that would be Adorama, B&H etc etc, Nikon UK would only honour the first year of the 5 Year Warranty on USA lenses.

Nikon do give lists of their authorised dealers - if they are on the list, for lenses then you should have a warranty. Should...

Bodies do not have an international warranty under any circumstances when Grey Imported with Nikon UK.

By the time you add VAT to your purchases.. (on a 70-200 you'd be looking at least £175+) it's probably false economy.

Given its posted in a thread about imports I assumed it was.

The other caveat with Nikon is that you must register the camera within 30 days of purchase, if your outside that time limit again you wont get the extra year.

Actually that's not true. The registration with HomeServe is sooo hit and miss that Nikon take your purchase receipt as the date and in my experience the 2nd year registration never goes smoothly.

Cameras (Nikon or anyone else) have a two year warranty - this is EU law, and nothing to do with another bit of paper in the box. Nikon's extra 1 year via HomeServe is just a data-mining exercise IMHO.

I couldn't find anything mentioned there about lenses or cameras :/ just that all consumer goods have two years warranty. (or does lenses and cameras not count as consumer goods?)
