Nikon - Which wide angle FX lens?

Hi guys,
As above, no more than around the £1000 mark, ideally for cityscapes at night etc
 
I've not had first hand experience, but the 14-24mm seems to be very well regarded and goes for around that figure if you don't mind buying used.
 
If you can not locate one of those or it is a little too pricey you could look at a 17-35 ƒ2.8 Sigma.

I have one and I am very pleased with it.... its not the Nikon but it holds it own.

I picked mine up from LCE on the strand in London, they always have a good selection of used lenses in stock, might be worth giving them a call.

How wide do you want to go? Zoom or prime?

If the Nikkor 14-24 is too expensive (and you can't find one second hand), you could try the Sigma 12-24. It's not f/2.8 and some people have reported problems with their copy but it's well within your budget. 12mm is VERY wide on FF so perspective is exagerated, although barrel and pincushion distortion is very well controlled.
 
Just to add; I picked up a mint copy of the older Sigma 15-30mm EX DG, which is ultra wide on full frame and I am very pleased with it.
 
The Nikon 17-35 f2.8 is still a stunning lens, plus you can use filters with it easily unlike the 14-24. Typical Nikon bomb proof build quality and sharp as you like :)

I can only agree with SparkUK's comments but also suggest the Nikon 20-35mm f/2.8 for your consideration as it's a good lens and should be cheaper, even if it doesn't go as wide.

but the 14-24 is meant to be /perfect/ apart from not being able to use filters.

Definitely, it's more like the 35-70mm type... great lens :)

That was the only thing that put me off that lens, I believe Lee Filters do a kit for it now but it's too much messing about. It's probably too wide for 'normal' landscape type stuff though.
 
mpbphotographic have a few 14-28mm f2.8 lenses for £1014 (or £1019 cant remember) - just slightly out of your stated price range but they are creme de la creme of nikon wide angle lenses.

By the way, 14mm on a FX is massively wide.
