I am thinking of buying a wide angle zoom for my D7100, something along the lines of 10mm or 12mm - 24mm. I know there are a fair few lens from different manufacturers in this range, so looking for recommendations from users.

Depends on your budget really...

Lots of people swear by the Tokina 11-16mm which is great as it is also f/2.8 which is good if you're planning starscapes. However, for some the limited focal range reduces its usability, I find it quite handy when the UWA will also bring you into the 35mm equivalent (so 20mm in your money) as you can leave it attached to the camera to get more normal shots.

I concur with what Nawty says - however you could always consider the new Tokina 11-20 2.8 if you want slightly more range. But my 11-16 was a corker, and a much missed lens!

I will check out the Tokina 10-20, just picked up this months copy of NPhoto, with a test on a number of wide angle zooms. Very timely published I think

I fancy something around f2.8, not sure on the range though, will have to visit LPS, and have a little test/try, I've even had a cursory glance at a 10mm prime. Will a 10-20 make more sense, or is the 11-16 a much better lens? Don't want to make an expensive mistake. Thanks for the pointer though, all worth a look.

Have owned the Nikon 10-24 and loved it. If you want wider, the Sigma 8-16 is as wide as it gets for DX. Neither are f2.8 of course. Both are great lenses which I can reccomend.

I think 10mm is wide enough, that is my 'target' wide end, I already have. 17-70 mm Sigma lens, so a bit of overlap on this wouldn't hurt I guess

I'm going through the same at the moment.
Looking for something wide, borrowed a friend's sigma 10-20 last year which was excellent fun.

Top of my list is the tokina, only concern is that the zoom range is pretty limited...
