Nikon wide angle

I've been happy with my Sigma 10-20 for wide angle shots but I'm missing the image quality of the Nikon 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 so I am thinking of getting a Nikon 14-24 2.8 - it will be used on both the D2Hs and the D3.
It's a chunk of cash and so I am wondering if there is anything to compare with it that might be a bit less but without any noticeable loss in image quality

Am I asking too much ... anyone any observations?

17-35 f/2.8

Both very good - light years ahead of 10-20 - and take 77mm filters.

daugirdas recommends some good lenses. I'd say both of those are better options considering the added versatility in having the 24-35 range as well as the ability to use filters. However the 14-24 is really incredible optically, so if you know you need the 14mm then you could get it. Very exotic piece of glass.
