Nikon Z* mirrorless

that's nice wished I could get pic of a Heron like that might have a look at the z50

I would not recommend it for BIF just yet, I need some more time on it.

I'm not sure I'd count a few of the things on the list as critical as they have, but mostly good points. Honestly if they could fix AF-C, improve eye-af to make it usable ( I may still not use it honestly but it's a nice to have I think ) and make it more usable in different AF modes, then I think with just those few I'd be happy. If they fix that on the Z6, and then bring out a gripped body as well I think my world will be a snuggly happy place :D

Nikon aren’t renowned for offering major firmware updates so I’m not holding my breath tbh.

Really hoping for improvement with eye AF

TBH I think the eye AF ok it seem to be performing ok it just the AF-C that could possibly do with a bit of improvement but ive manage so far

Has a new FW update been mentioned somewhere, or is everyone just speculating at this point?

There is mention there is a new one coming was suppose be end of this year but it might be start of next

There's confirmation of a new FW including ProRes RAW video update along with new AF changes. But some say that for this FW you'd need to send your camera back to Nikon...I guess we'll see what's real and what's not

Bit stupid having to send camera back everyone be having to do that and it would cost nikon a bit

The information points to a possible minor HW update, or more likely in my opinion, the cameras need an update to a chip in the camera that cannot be updated by normal XQD methods. I'm thinking it's something to do with the HDMI security which needs updating to allow the raw output to work.

I believe the new firmware was originally supposed to be launched sometime in November, but read somewhere Nikon pushed it back due to the lack of general availability of the new CFExpress cards that the new firmware will start supporting in addition to the existing XQD series.

I think Atomos (the people that make the Ninja external recorders), gave an interview on youtube where they mentioned that it just wasn't the new CFExpress update that was coming but much improved AF as well.

My thoughts exactly...and like @Sootchucker said in the next post, the AF is supposed to be improved as well...

I think we’re just hoping...

Nikon can't afford to just leave us hoping. Canon, from what I'm hearing from those shooting the R, are now quite a way ahead of the Z cameras in AF. But Canon have gone overboard with some crazy 1.2 lenses which are silly prices, where Nikon I think went right with the 1.8s primes which are stunning and don't cost the earth. But I have to say, I lust after the 50/1.2 and 85/1.2 lenses that Canon have right now.

London, United Kingdom, 27th August 2019: Nikon today introduces a dedicated LUT (lookup table) for N-Log videography, a new feature for the Nikon Z 7 and Z 6 cameras. A new firmware update will also be released later this year for the Z 7 and Z 6 cameras that will support RAW video output straight from the camera. This firmware will enable recording in Apple’s versatile ProRes RAW video format on the Ninja V 4K HDR monitor/recorder made by ATOMOS, Nikon’s collaborator in developing RAW video output technology.

With this firmware release, the Nikon Z 7 and Z 6 will be the first consumer cameras to officially support RAW video output, currently only available in professional cinema cameras. RAW video files provide the richest information, just as RAW data does for still images. By bringing even more flexibility to post-production colour grading, RAW video output support firmly places Nikon mirrorless cameras in the same realm as professional cinema cameras, making them an affordable choice for full-scale movie production.

The dedicated LUT for Nikon’s N-Log is compatible with the Rec. 709 colour space. It is also a 3D LUT, enabling adjustment of brightness, saturation and hue, in addition to RGB colours. A LUT is preset data of RGB colour values, used to transform the appearance of video footage in post-production colour grading. The Z 7 and Z 6’s N-Log HDMI output recording is optimised for 10-bit recording, bringing out the image sensor’s full dynamic range. It records rich gradation information in highlights and shadows to allow for more flexible colour grading.

The LUT will be available for download, free of charge, from the Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 pages on Nikon's Download
Centre: https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/.
An internal setting on the camera must be revised during a service at an authorised Nikon Service Centre prior to downloading the firmware update, to allow RAW video output to be enabled. This service will attract local charges.

Yup that's the one.

That last statement to me feels like, as I sid, it's a non user updatable firmware in a chip in the camera. Not a big deal to send off to have sorted, but I'm hoping the FW update doesn't require it unless you want RAW output otherwise Nikon will be swamped with returned units to upgrade.

Yup I am just hoping there is updates to speed up the AF without having to send the Camera in and it just or the Video Raw.. If it for everything then like your say there be trouble for nikon to keep up with the demands

Nothing there about any other improvements, plus there’s a charge for the update

Think the charge a hard ware update for raw video so hoping other updates be firmware. There a fee site mention af updates coming

Well I shall keep my fingers crossed. Usually Nikon Rumors is pretty reliable so if it appears on there I might start to get excited (y)

Sell that bike of yours and buy a a9mk2 and all the long primes. You don't ride it anyway :)
Nah, it’s great being back on 2 wheels. Anyway, I’m pretty confident Nikon will get it sorted and will bring out a camera that fulfils all my needs (y)
