Nikon Z* mirrorless

Was on holiday on the IOW last week, used the Z 28mm/2.8 on my Z9 almost exclusively all week. This lens really punches way above its weight. Brilliant lens.

Looks suspiciously like Bembridge?

Hey all, quick question please. I recently purchased a Sennheiser MKE200 external mic to improve the audio on my videos. It works perfectly on my OM-1 and EM1-X, but when I tested it last night on my Z7 II, the sound was barely audible. I tried the microphone volume set to Auto, then manual, and even with the gain turned up to 20 (the max), the sound was really soft, but at that high a level, there was also a lot of hissing.

Then by chance I messed around with other settings and turned off the attenuator and wow, the sound blasted out and I had to dial the mic volume back to 7-8 , to ensure the DB meters weren't regularly going over -12db (which seems to be the generally approved max limit for video and mics). I always thought the attenuator was there to just stop the mic being overloaded with very loud sounds (such as bangs and heavy wind etc), but didn't realise that it cuts the gain to the mic so much. Does that sound right, and is that normal behaviour on the Z cameras or not. As stated on my Olympus cameras with attenuator ON, the sound is perfect ? Any ideas please. Is the attenuator on the Z's only really useable with powered mics that have the ability to increase the gain on the mic internally ?

Very nice Pete, I like the Z 28/2.8 on both the Z6 & Zfc I have. My only issue is the purple fringing I get.... my copy appears to be really bad for it!

Thanks

I'll be honest I've not noticed any purple fringing on my copy. It pretty much lives on my Z9 if I'm out. I have a small sling that can carry the Z9 with the 28mm attached and then either the 24-70/2.8 or 105Mc along with it also.

Another wee lens that punches above its weight IMHO is the 40/2. If not shot wide open, and I still do it anyway, it’s a belter of a lens for the money, not noticed anything particularly bad(not the sharpest wide open and sharpness at corners not amazing)and for video it’s cracking.
to be fair though it’s only my 2nd Z lens

Hi guys, I’m looking at picking up a used Z6 from CEX and I’m trying to determine the shutter count before purchasing. Anyone know if this is possible without a lens attached to the body? as they don’t actually have a Z lens in stock.

Cheers.

Not certain whether there is an iincrement without a lens but, if there is a Z adapter avaialable you could use pretty much any Nikon lens

No adapters, just the body cap afraid. Trying to avoid the ball ache of returning should it have 3 million actuations.

I believe that the only way to determine is uploading the last shot taken with the body, you would need a Z lens or FtZ with any Nikon lens To do it. Wouldn't it be easier to get them to clarify it for you?

You can take pictures in manual mode w/o a lens attached. The only way I know to get the mechanical shutter count is to use something like exiftool.

I asked, but they say they don’t have a lens in stock to put on the body.

Thanks for that, I’ll forward that info on, if it works in manual mode. Appreciated.

Picked up a Z7ii last week. Predominately I wanted the increased resolution and the extended shutter modes my Z6 hadn't got.

Haven't spent much time out with it, but I'm super impressed so far. Have a bit of a quandry now as to whether to get rid of the ZFC & X100v I have for more everyday shooting and just stick with the Z72 for almost all my needs!

I'd go with the Z7ii and get rid of the rest.

The 45mp is such a jump over the others you will soon resent using the lower MP bodies.

100% view really shows the difference is up as the 45mp is pretty much medium format IQ

One from St Paul's Cathedral last week, just before the announcement of the Queen's death on Thursday. Z7 II 14-30 F4

The good thing about the higher mp Z7II, is in crop mode you'll gain reach with a stabilised sensor but only drop to Z-fc mp. You can always crop instead. I got rid of my Z50 once I got the Z7II.
That was my thinking in picking up the Z72. Even if I kept the 16-50mm (which I probably wouldn't) I could still end up with almost DX crop files images.
I’d keep the zfc. Small but good when you want to carry light.
I don't find the Z72 too onerous to carry... if I sold it on I could pick up the 85mm Z lens & just go with 28, 40 & 85 when I want to travel a little lighter!

Went to the Photography Show at the NEC today. Booked into one of the photo walks so got to take a walk around with Ricci and a model Nikon had booked.

Well worth trying to get booked on if you are going. OK you only get a short amount of time with the model as there's 10 of you in a group but you got a couple of shots at each location each and great to natter while you're on the way round. All taken on my Z9 and 50/1.2 I think at f2.8 in the first image and f3.2 for the last two.

Anyone swapped from the 24-70 to the 24-120?

Trying to decide if it’s a better option for me, I shoot mainly woodland & landscape and quite often find I’m shooting at 70mm, not sure if I swapped out to the 24-120 I’d just end up shooting at 120mm!

I did. Bought my z5 with a 24-50 kit lens and almost immediately swapped it for a 24-70 bought new. It felt like a decent upgrade.

Somebody here linked to a 24-120 on sale on ebay at a decent price and on an impulse I bought it. I kept the 24-70 for a while, but it was never on my camera so I sold it as well.

I really like the 24-120. I think it has better IQ than the 24-70. Finding the best focal point is a challenge, for me anyway, as it shows up everything. It's more lens than my skill level justifies, but I like it. My interests are similar to yours, landscapes, often coastal villages. Things that don't move!

Hi all, I've not been on here that much lately.
I have the Z6ii, a couple of mornings ago I went out for a sunrise shoot and long exposure shots, I noticed that when I turned the shutter speed dial to 60 sec I was sure that it wasn't there before, it was bulb and time then x200, the great thing now is that it counts down the seconds. I guess it was a update. Photo from Saturday.

Z6ii & Z7ii go to 900 seconds in extended shutter speeds in manual mode if selected in the Menu setting.

Anyone doing any astro ? Looking for something wide and fast for a Z6ii - samyang 14mm looks likely, if I can get a good copy.

Or the literally-just-announced 17-28?

Indeed I have used the tamron version and its pretty good

It might also be cheaper to buy the tamron version with a megadap etz21 adapter ;) (and available immediately)

Here's a review of the new 17-28mm lens, but he also rounds up the other available Z lenses and their usage. He is very keen on the 24-120, indeed at one point I think he says it is his favourite lens. He gives a usage case for it and says it is a good woodland lens. If you don't want to watch it all, the roundup in the last 5 minutes or so will give you most of it....

I purchased the Z 24-120 lens about 4 months ago and to be honest hadn't really used it until my trip to London a few weeks ago. I took just the Z7 II, 24-120 and 14-30 (and my GoPro Hero 9). The 24-120 was on the camera for 95% of shots and I have to say ended up being mightily impressed with the image quality and handling of it. It's about the same size and maybe just a tad heavier than my all time favourite lens (my Olympus 12-100 F4 Pro, which I still use on my OM-1), and think I'll be using it much more in the coming months and years.

Is the 17-28 a rebranded tamron like the 28-75 - or is it a Nikkor design?
pretty sure its the rebranded tamron 17-28mm. Coincidentally they have also added a 70-180mm on their roadmap which I am pretty sure will be the rebranded tamron 70-180mm f2.8.
I am just a little sad they didn't rebrand the G2 version of 28-75mm which is wee bit smaller, optically better with better rendering.

All three good lenses though.
