Nikon zoom lens needed

Hi all

well after getting the Sigma 17-70 contemporary from the wife for Christmas and already owning a 35mm 1.8G I am on the lookout for a zoom to take me up to around 250-300mm. I have been looking at the Tamron SP AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens and the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Lens. I have a budget of around £300 so has anyone got any experience of the two lens I am looking at or any other suggestions as I am reading mixed things about both.

What about a used nikon 70-300? The last one on avf sold for £230.
 
What about the Nikkor 55-300mm new or Nikor 70-300mm used?

Must type faster!:D
 
Yes I saw that but was too late, was going to give it a try. There is a Tamron in the classifieds here so not sure whether to go for that but I am really happy with my Sigma that I am just undecided.
 
The 55-300mm Nikkor looks good and is slightly cheaper so would leave me a bit for a tripod. Anyone have any experience with any of the lenses.

I have one, bought it while fairly new to photography and had it on a D5100 at the time too. Most of the shots here were taken with it.
As i said i was new to photography at the time so excuse the poor composition etc but it might give you an idea of the lenses capabilities.

Save up and get the nikon 70-300, don't rush and get something you sell off soon.

Your shots look pretty good to me Phil, I am now stuck between this and the Tamron in the classifieds here.
 
MPB photographic have a couple of 55-300 afs around the £150 mark or the 70-300 afs around the £230 mark.
If i knew then what i know now it would go for the 70-300!
 
Well I am going to take the advice and go for the 70-300 afs, cannot wait to give it a try.
 
I have the Tamron and it is very sharp! the OS is rock solid also. Not sure how it compares to the Nikon version on AF speed but most reviews put the Tamron slightly ahead.
 
Oh no now I am confused even more as there is a Tamron in the for sale section at a good price.
 
I was later contacted by the guy, who bought my Tamron 70-300... he just wanted to let me know, that he and three of his friends with Nikkors 70-300 had been comparing lenses.
And that they all agreed, the Tamron was the sharpest of them.

He was very pleased.

But he also contacted me some months ago for the receipt, as he wanted to ship it to Tamron for an examination.
The lens sometimes had a bit of "hunt" at the long end, especially when light was fading.
I thought it was "natural", but since it still was under warranty, he shipped it in.
Last report from the happy user was, that Tamron had replaced AF free of charge.

Please note, there are two Tamron 70-300. It's very important, that you go for the latest incarnation! Big difference!

Yep, the 'VC' is the newer model which has Vibration Control (Tamron's version of Nikon's VR). I sold that lens in these forums and after also owning a Nikon 70-200 V1 and selling that on, I'm now thinking about getting the Tamron again. It is a very sharp lens!
