Nikon?

Im in the middle of a basic digital photography course and I am looking at investing in my first Dslr. I like the feel of Nikon's in my hand and think the D90 seems to fit what I want from a Dslr but would like to hear if anyone has any advice on where to buy, New or second hand, and if there are any other cameras worth looking at? Thanks

I've got a D90 (had one for just over a year now) and think it's a great beginners/intermediate camera, I could do with a few extra focus points, but don't really see the need to upgrade, as there's plenty of stuff still to learn from it.

I got a Nikon D80 from www.warehouseexpress.co.uk and have to admit they were quick and had no problems.

I'm a bit iffy with 2nd hand stuff as I'm not sure how its been treated before I get it.

Welcome to the SLR world, warning buying lenses and accessories will become very addictive and expensive :lol:
 
What course are you doing if you dont mind me asking? Im tempted to take an online course.
 
I got a refurbed D40 from Carmarthen Cameras last year and they were excellent. They have an Ebay presence but I called them up and they included a free 4gb Nikon card.
They have some refurbed D90's at present, body only, with a 18-55 or with a 18-105mm.
 
I personally think that the D90 will soon become a classic!! Yes, it's coming up to three years old (and thus at least three year old technology) but that won't stop you taking some excellent shots with it.
I initially looked at the D90 and the D7000 before purchasing, but decided the difference in price for the body would be better spent on putting 'better' quality glass in front of the body.
 
D300 here - can easily recommend it (check the second hand pricing but I think its out of your budget..?) D90 is the cut down version but well worth it! Also has a drive motor... the d40/d3000/d5000 don't have motors, so I (personally) would stay away from them.

Lenses - well depends on what you shoot.
Really could do with a thread on top notch lenses to look for :D but the ones I've listed/have are really good - some better quality out there for different things :) - oh and look at the sigma 30mm f1.4 (if you get a good copy) or nikon 35mm f1.8 as a normal/portrait lens...

Totally agree, I am in the same position, I drooled over the D7000 but have decided to buy the D90 after holding one in PC World yesterday, very solid camera with all the buttons in the right place, etc. Plus its nearly half the price.

Grasshopper, It might be worth doing the same before you buy go to somewhere like Jessops and hold one before you decide.

Almost all the togs in my office have, and thus recommended, Canon before I bought my kit. I tried the 60D, D7000 and D90 all at the same time with similar lenses and the Nikons just felt more natural and solidly built in my hands. Personal preference I suppose!
 
I moved from Canon to Nikon and was worried I wouldn't be able to get my head around where everything was. Actually I found the Nikon to be easier.
Have to say that Nikon does feel more solid to me than Canon but it's horses for courses.
 
Trying to make direct comparisons between Nikon, Canon and the other major brands is pretty pointless. They're all very good, and each tends to have it's own strengths and weaknesses. I wouldn't worry about it. Just get the one that feels best to you. You can always consider changing brands later, once you have more experience, if there's a compelling reason to.

FWIW, the man difference between Nikon and Canon is probably the ergonomics. Some people have a strong preference for one or the other. I shoot Canon - mainly because I couldn't afford a D200 and got a sweetheart deal on a 30D kit for half the price of the Nikon body - but I'm quite comfortable with the Nikon system too.

Im doing an evening course at a local collage called "Digital Photography". Its only a basic course for 10 weeks but I have learnt so much already and can finnally get some of those shots Iv been trying for. Well worth the couple of hours a week.

Couldn't agree more, I went and bought mine together with a friend. He couldn't stand the way the Nikon felt and I couldn't how the Canon felt. Either is great, just choose the one you like to handle best.

But yes, don't go down any lower in the range than the D90. It is a cracking camera but you start loosing the top lcd and dual control wheels for example if you go down in the range.
