I chose this subject, as music photography was a big part of my life in 2011, so you could say this was MY direction (photographically speaking ;)). This little iPod also has the direction arrows on it which helps with the theme I guess :p

The only thing im really not pleased about, is that I couldnt get the background as consistently white as I wanted. I used exposure compensation, but it still doesnt seem to have done the trick. A big part of this project for me will be using flash (as I have here), as im not particularly confident in that area.

Thanks Tina. I had the flash camera left with a small diffuser on, and a reflector camera right to try and even out the background a little. Maybe ill dial down the flash a little next time ;)

Hi, Nick and welcome aboard the merry (for merry read crazy, raving, mental and off the rails!) 52.

Nice and tight which I like and nice details. As the forward and back buttons are integral parts of the theme I'd like to see both in focus.

Cheers.

Thanks Andy. See what you mean about the forward AND back buttons being in focus. I hadnt thought of it like that before (y)

I could have tried to get out of it by saying that only the forward buttons were sharp because I am focused on moving forward with my photography, but im sure you would all be able to spot a Bull **** answer if you saw one! :D

Thanks again

Subject doesn't really scream direction at me, and it shouldn't really have to be explained in a paragraph in my opinion (although I do know it's not a rule that you don't give a brief explanation), but it's a nice photo regardless. Good detail and composition. Good luck with the 52

Hi ya Nick & welcome aboard

Great start to your project & a difficult one to light correctly....you've done bloomin well & far better than I could have

As per Andy....all the arrows in focus would have added to the Driection theme but it does work well as it is

Great start & look forward to your next 51 weeks (y)

Thanks Lynne. As I said previously the whole flash thing is a bit out of my comfort zone, so im going to try and push my limits in the remaining 51 weeks! :D

I love the concept and the execution - good luck for the next 51 Nick!

Good concept with the idea of personal direction and the direction of the music on the player itself. Well captured shot with a good and interesting composition. As you've said a tiny bit more to be done on the lighting although I personally dont mind the gradient of the white changing going backwards with the depth of field :)

A nice clean, crisp shot - I like it.

Well done Nick, a great start to your challenge.

You have done well with the lighting, its something I need to work on and am hoping this challenge will help me.

Thank you Sarah! You never know, we could end up swapping tips on lighting techniques as the year goes on (y)

Nice idea for the theme, it works well. Looks like a clean sharp shot with good comp and nice placing of the pod.

Does look a little bright in areas but I look forward to your 52.

Good luck with it.

Many thanks Joe (y)

Thanks Peter & Mandy, im really looking forward to the remaining 51 :D

So, week 2.

I had a very definite idea for this, and I quite like the result. I went for a generally murky look to the shot. Something is bugging me about it, but im not sure what.

A political view from me this week....I make no apologies for that :D

I know what you mean about something bugging you, i think for me its my eye is drawn in, but the end of the subway is slanted, but i also think if it was straight that the paper would look wrong, great idea though

Great composition Nick, all looks good to me, I like the camera angle. Not sure what looks wrong to you is it because you think the paper looks too clean ?

Nick, I like the idea - a lot. Did you shoot it such that there was a slant to the walkway or was that how you cropped it? This, the slant, is what's nagging me about the shot.

Ok, thanks all for your comments (y)

I havent cropped this at all, it is 'as shot'. Although it has a political feel, its not necessarily my view, so I shot it at this angle to show that the view is slightly scewed.

I think Nick (Blank_Canvas) and Michael are right, it is the newspaper that is bothering me. Its way too bright and clean. Maybe I should have walked over it and chucked it in a puddle first :D

Thanks again everyone (y)

Like the idea for fear, composition looks a bit unbalanced tonally.

I look forward to seeing your other ideas. Links to your pictures would be helpful.

I think its the paper too, its super clean in a grimy location. I like the shot though (y)

Probably a shot from further back and slightly higher would help with the paper view and then the it could be rotated to level out the subway. Like the B&W though.

Steve
