Nikons new 28mm F1.8 has anyone used one whats it like?

I'm pretty pleased with mine though I've not had it long enough to really find it's strengths and weaknesses. Seems sharp wide open and certainly nice and sharp at f/8 and f/11 which was predominantly what I bought it for (landscapes etc).

Downsides, it seems a bit cheap in terms of construction. The build seems to have more in common with kit lenses than pro lenses if that makes sense. It's certainly not a problem especially as I bought mine to save some weight over carting my 24-70 about. It's just one of those things that you notice straight away especially having just blown £400 on it.

So far so good from me then. I suppose one thing that swayed me towards this lens is it's apparent lack of real competition. The 24mm 1.4 has huge appeal but is mega money. I don't think much at all of the af-d 2.8 lenses. After that I think it's manual focus of which there are many great options if that's your thing.

I'm quite surprised you say that as I would almost say the opposite although I suppose it is quite a bit bigger than something like a 50mm 1.8 or any of the wide AFD 2.8 primes. It doesn't feel bulky to me but then as I said I'm coming from a 24-70 so it seems pretty light to me!

What camera will you be using it on by the way?
 
I'm also thinking of getting this lens for my D700.
Looking at reviews etc seems like it's in a similar vein to the rest of the "new" AF-S lenses. I already have the 50mm 1.8 AF-S, the 35mm f1.8 AF-S, and they are excellent optically.
The downside (If you think it is a downside) is that they are plastic, and feel almost flimsy.
Having said that, I don't chuck my lenses around, so plastic = lightweight, so it can be a good thing.
As Graham said, the 24mm f1.4 is one to lust after, but it is a much bigger price tag !
 
I have the 24 1.4, tried the 28 1.8 for a bit. Ended up keeping the 24 because of the field of view. Had it been a 24 1.8, the 1.4 would be for sale.

WRT build quality, the 24 is a plastic bodied lens as well ;) . The difference is in the build cues - the 28's barrel is like the barrel on the 70-300. But that's not an actual quality thing as much as it is a 'learned cue' thing. It's also really light for the size - while it isn't that much smaller than the 24, it's half the weight.

had it and didnt like it.
 
for me when its that wide i want everything in focus

to use the 1.4 for vportraits and that you had to get close which seemed pointless and was uncomfortable as well,so i stuck with my F2.8
 
I agree, I prefer 28mm for portraits over the 24mm, but for landscapes, then the 24 or even a 21mm is better IMHO.
