Nissin Di622 - Any Good? Cheapest Supplier?

Hi Guys & Gals,

Thought I'd ask the experts on here. :clap: Was looking at getting one of these, can't quite go to the £300+ for a 580ex which I'd love. :'(

Anyhow, been doing some research and this one seems like a great alternative, but would like some peoples reactions to this flash and if so where best/cheapest to buy it from? :shrug:

Will be using it on a Canon 50D.

its a very good flashgun, solidly built, with a nice power output and a decent flash recycle. I even prefer the head and built in bounce card to the crappy 430EXII head. I am not sure if they are compatible with wireless triggers though, hopefully Flash In The Pan will be along soon to verify.
 
It is a very good flash but, if you can afford it, go with the Di866 (less than £200 brand new). I have both and the screen + extra power of the 866 make it worthwhile in my opinion. Also it should be ok with wireless triggers.

Nissin were offering a free firmware update that claimed to cure the problem. Newer models I assume will have this incorporated so should be fine, however there have been some reports of issues still remaining.

Of course if you're planning to use it on-camera then it makes no difference whatsoever!
 
I purchased a s/hand Nissin Di622 primarily to use as a slave flash, and for the money (New ~ £94 from 7dayshop ) its a very good value flash which is simple and easy to operate.

With regard to the wireless triggers, I can confirm that at present the Di622 does not work with the Yongnuo RF-602 trigger. I have sent an email to Nissin to ask about a firmware update, but have not as yet received a reply - I understand the Nikon version of the flash does incorporate a wireless trigger facility, so maybe?

For me, using it as a slave, the only slight weakness I have noticed is that the optical/infrared sensor is not as sensitive as the Canon Flashguns and I have had a few misfires. I have also used it with my 7D in commander mode and again this works (again a few misfires - but I do need a firmware update as the 7D is not showing as a directly compatible unit) - one good point is that the Nissin ignores the pre-flash and operates correctly.

But for the money, it seems a good entry level flash - as mentioned above the Di866 is a lot more powerful, but the cost is then moving towards Canon levels.

Just an update, I received the following in response to my query as to whether a firmware update will allow the Di622 to use wireless triggers:

Unfortunately the firmware update to release the ‘X-contact’ of the Canon Di622 has not yet been released, but we have been informed that Nissin are releasing a Mark 2 version of the Di622 in September that does have a wireless TTL remote mode.

The cheapest high st price I've seen is cameraworld @ £109.

Great flash for the money and works with canon wireless ettl off camera as well so if you later get a 580 or ST-E2 or upgrade to a 7D( all have command unit functions) it will work with them wirelessly.Also works as an optically triggered slave.
