Hey, arranged my first model photoshoot for today and just got back home 30min after the meet time as she is uncontactable via her phone (no credit it seems) and no reply over Facebook, which was used for conversations too.
Just wondering what others have experienced and is it a common thing when there is no money involved? The model is just starting out and this would of been her first portfolio images.

Never had a no show, but I've had a model contact me the day before and say she was changin her levels. I had her booked for lingerie and topless, and then said she now only shot fashion. I'd already booked the studio and paid a deposit which wasn't refundable (luckily I managed to find someone else last minute). I was not a happy bunny.

first mistake don't use facebook and always contact them before the shoot.

make sure they have all means of contact.

the model has had second thoughts about the shoot IMHO and instead of being polite he has just stood you up.

it's only happened to me once working exact same excuse. I only use model sites that allow feedback to be left for this reason.

I wasn't shy about leaving her feedback on Purestorm. She dropped off the radar soon after so I doubt she was bothered  I suppose at least she told me the day before instead of on the day, that would have RA-HEALLY ****ed me off

welcome to the wonderful world of TFP model photography

and yes it is quite common for newbies and wannabees not to turn up.your best 'punt' at having models actually turn up is to check their portfolio feedback to ensure it is at the very least good, offer some 'reward' in the form of travel expenses being covered, and to absolutely avoid attracting the vary many 'wasters' on social networking sites.on top of this it is vital that you act in a completely professional manor in making all your arrangements with any model and expect the same in return.

People tend to value things according to the amount they cost - both how much they pay, and how much they are paid.

When there's no cash involved, there's no psychological investment.

As an alternative, and to create a sense of value.. how about replacing TFP/CD with.. £20 to the model for turning up (paid by you) - no show = no pay.. and £20 from the model to you for the prints/CD - you fluff the shots = no pay.

It's the same net effect, but gives an incentive to both you and the model to take it seriously.

Thanks for your replies. Interesting option with the £20 to the model for showing up... Something I may try.
How much is a model's time worth from model site's in general? I expect to pay extra for nude or semi nude shots but for a fully clothed shoot? Obviously models with a lot of experience will expect more as you should get better images from them but models with 'some' experience? I know this is a bit of a loose question as everyone can be different but I'm talking ball park figures.

same applies to the photographer.think about it,why ? should a reasonably experienced model shoot TFP with an inexperienced photographer, after all,the images she is likely to get are at worst not going to be portfolio suitable, for her anyway, and her time will have been wasted, yes, the photographer gains valuable experience working with the model but there is still no incentive for her to work unpaid.inexperienced photographers should expect to pay an experienced model the going rate and somewhat less for a lesser experienced model that can model without direction.i certainly dont go along with any inexperienced photographer expecting to shoot a model semi-nude or nude for TFP,the models going rate based on her/his experience should be the order of the day and nothing less.

Yes, I agree. I didn't mean it to sound like I wanted experienced models for free/TFP. I was asking how much I should expect to pay an hour for various levels of experience and also on top of that what the 'extra charges' would be for nude/semi nude as I always see 'Contact for prices' from all models that charge but I don't know whether I'd be paying over the odds for the experience level.

if you are inexperienced when it comes to photographing models i would try and offer a combo (pics and cash)

firstly avoid models with no experience as newbie tog and newbie model normally equates to ***** images

model with some experience upto fashion £15 hr or £50 half day
model with lots of experience " " £25+ hr or £70 half day

upto lingerie with some experience £20hr or £60 half day
upto lingerie with lots of experience£30hr or £90 half day

upto art-nude with some experience £35hr or £100 half day
upto art-nude with lots of experience £40hr+ hr or £120 half day

if the model is coming to you, also offer her reasonable travel costs

the prices above i consider to be fair in the current climate (others may disagree) and could certainly be lowered if you have experience and able to offer the model a limited amount (perhaps 10) of portfolio worthy images as part of any agreement.try and negotiate

i would also suggest that at first you attend a few group shoots and also studio days beforehand where very often there will be experienced models/photographers and organisers to offer advise with lighting etc and these days often work out much cheaper and you will learn a lot

models no show even when they are paid.

TFP is a good system, it's only due to an in flux of wannabes that have ruined it.

Thanks for the info on prices Peter. I am looking into doing group shoots soon.
