No Togging in Edinburgh

ok well I am just back from Princess Street, and yes I got approached within 2 minutes and interegated by a young so and so security gaurd, trying to ask in his newly found language, which establisment or company I am from. I replied along the lines of why, what if I am and what if im not. and he continued to follow me round mumbiling stuff until he got backup in the form of what looked like a convicted nutter who would not believe it possible to own for personal use a DSLR with a big lens.

why oh why cant we just go and enjoy or lifes without this big nanny state we live in?

Michael

You should take a big lens then :p Try not to be overly defensive with them. Thats asking for trouble. Tell them why you're there and if they have issues with it then start to discuss it.

its because they all wanted to be in the police and failed and they hate the world for it... simply put, or their ex cons who cant do anything else

I shot pictures there last year with no problems - which surprised me a little becasue at any other time of your you need permission to shoot in Pricess Street gardens if they suspect - or it looks like - a commercial shoot - as opposed to snaps. You need a permit from Historic Scotland or somewhere and it's been like that for 30 years or more! Tripods have always been a no no in the street - esp when it's busy. Planning to go back this year - in a week or so....so we'll see!

i dont understand why a tripod automatically means commercial...

I didn't say it did - it means a potential obstruction. 5 x 4 camera on a tripod used to mean commercial - now any big expensive looking DSLR qualifies!

ridiculous

if i dont use a smilie people dont get the tone hahaha... i meant its ridiculous that a dslr qualifies someone contesting you taking pictures nowerdays...:cuckoo:

What about people on bikes, with pushchairs, with mobility carts, with zimmer frames or with walking sticks? They're as much of a hazard as a tripod is! I'm going to spray my tripod luminous yellow with black stripes on it so it stands out like a sore thumb. Then no rent-a-cop will have the "obstruction" excuse.

I'm still yet to have anyone hassle me about photography in public places. I can't wait for the first one!

Neither have I - and I'd rather keep it that way - no point in looking for trouble.

They tried this on with me last year or the previous year Im not sure I stood my ground and told them where to visit . i then asked them to call the police ,as I was being harrased and they were commiting a breach of the peace . The princess street gardens are a public place no matter who has
hired areas of it.
By contrast in the summer I was taking pictures with a medium format camera on a large tripod all around the scottish parliament and Hollyrood palace ,police were there security gaurds no one bothered me I think some guards get a bit power crazy most dont have a clue regards the law.
Complain to Edinburgh district council and the Police .

Letter to balloons duly sent. (hold you breath for a reply !!!)

Hi there, i am coming up to princess gardens this weekend from liverpool and i understand that you are discouraging photographers from the public land.
Can you explain this decision to me and supply me with some sort of accreditation for taking photos.
These are not for commercial purposes just my own private collection.

Many thanks

Pace

"Ieeee!!! A Scouser!!! Och naw! Calm down laddy. Ye dunny need a pass" ;)

This Winter Wonderland crowd seem quite dodgy in that they have no recorded assets - yet seem to have all this kit. All associated companies with one of the five Directors (who has Directorships elsewhere) are either dissolved or brand new - with only one successful company which is an unrelated charity.

Me thinks there's some dodging of their creditors and the tax man going on there! hint hint...wink wink... :naughty:

Oh Pete !! such obvious scouse wit !!

no i,m not going up to edinburgh its full of iron brew/teachers whisky dole scroungers.

I am obviously fishing in the murky pool of doo gooders.

If the security asked me i would give the usual local dialect, "whats your f..kin problem muppet" you p*** get your facts straight an ef off. i know where you live !! etc etc

no reply yet !!

Incorrect, I'm afraid. If there is a fence around the area in question, which assuming it's the same as the set-up in George Square in Glasgow there will be, and the company have rented the area from the council for the duration of the event, it is, to all intents and purposes private property and they can set whatever restrictions on admitance they like.

Trust me, I've been through this before, with both organisers and the police

Even if technically they don't have a leg to stand on all they need to say is you were creating a disturbance or placing other members of the public in s state of fear or alarm and bingo...it's breach of the peace....

@ Flash In The Pan I was at George Square last year photographers were allowed to take photos same as this year. You are allowed to take general shots but not harrass customers. some photographers were incondciderate & started sticking tripods in busy areas and were moved on. Also there was a few who did decide they would take whatever photo they wanted personally somebody keeps sticking a camera in my face, my fist will follow, i'm nice that way lol some of security guard didnt have a clue either about regulations. In other words use common sense.

Depends how you define a public place. At the moment it's not.

Calm down, Calm down, It's all Ok now.
I was there last night and was asked to leave because parents might feel a bit uncomfortable with an SLR and tripod pointing at their kids.
So I went down to the site office at lunch time today, 4th Dec, and the manager told me that they received a load of complaints about the policy of no cameras so they've promptly lifted the ban.
So get down there, be nice and say hi to the security personnel and enjoy your hobby.

I went out to make a point of not being told what to do! when I can do what the hell I want in the summer in the same spot, oh but wait I cant because the bucket loads of tourists from all acrross the world prevent me from going about my daily life and the council digging up every other road preventing me from getting out of the town in a reasonable speed to have a life. so im away to get a drink now i have got that off my chest!

Hey, welcome to TP, Norm.

Is there an award for Best First Post Ever? I think you just walked off with it.

But now you've got to follow it up with the notorious Difficult Second Post .... ;)

:):) All good will be back down there next week, here is hoping they don't reinstate the ban in the meantime!!

:clap::clap:

Earlier on in this thread Pete hit the nail on the head.MISGUIDED.When security are placed in situ no matter where, they are given a set of instructions by the client. These have to be adhered to as they involve health &safety, such as basic first aid right through to emergency procedure, i.e fire, explosion, bomb threats etc.Their priority is the the majority not the minority. I fully understand the feeling of frustration you cant set up here but you can ten feet away over the railings but thats the way the companies and councils work.On that point security or events stewards not the same but dress that way have to act on that information supplied to them.Every one has their own interpretation of these, hence some guys ok some are definately jobs worth.I work side by side with them even i suffer because of it and im one of them, most of us if you talk civilly will try to help. As for wanting to be a policeman never did ex con in England and Wales no chance you need a crb. Minimum wage i have approx with holidays and rest days ioo days off im on £23000.Dark ages have gone.
I agree entirely though for photographers at these events or any where similar correct information regarding passes restrictions and any thing else related should be prominently displayed and clearly signed where to go for them at the event.

what about my out of order...:p

Hey guys, do you think you would be up for signing up for some sort of 'toggers' license that covers the whole of the country and means we can prove we are not spies, terrorists or on the sex offenders register?

i dont find much trouble being asked to stop togging because i am 25 and a dreadlocked art student (very obviously an art student!) so they generally pass me by.

However it would be good for there to be some sort of system in place where we could still go out and tog. Social photography is such a massive part of society and they really are causing a gross injustice if they do not let people photograph life.

so perhaps some sort of CRB check like they do for nurses, and a card of some kind to prove we are okay?
