When i press the shutter down to focus and the settings adjust in camera i can hear a very very quiet noise that comes from the 'camera' as the settings adjust. Is this normal? Canon 450D.

Not heard it before as it is usually noisey in my house!! lol

Done a test of the camera again and it happens in man mode too but, it only makes a noise when the flash is engaged. When the numbers change in the viewfinder thats when the noise happens. Very very faint indeed. Not coming from the lens. Doesn't happen when flash not engaged. It is so faint. Like a tiny squeak when the flash settings change.

Room has to be very quiet to hear it.

Sounds like the flash capacitor charging/discharging as it needs more or less power, but amazed that you can hear it. If you fire the flash you may hear it more loudly.

Also are you pressing the DOF button on the side of the lens mount? this causes a momentary "squeek" as the aperture changes.

It is definately the camera? if you have a lens with IS, this mechanism can have strange noises that last a few seconds then stop.

I hate strange noises, I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Just tried my 40D, it too squeeks if I press *, very very quiet though, you must have good ears.

I'd go along with Paul, sounds like the flash capacitor... The IS doesn't make any noticeable noise that I've spotted with the kit lens, and the 55-250 it's obvious when it kicks in. I have noticed the IS on long exposures, and it sounds like a tearing sound, not what you describe at all.

Capacitors can make this noise depending on how healthy they are. I've an old computer that when left on for a while actually starts whistling rather loudly, and the common cause is always capacitors. Electricity has a habit of being noisy; try standing in a room full of live switchgear

ah, i remember it well, 750kW motor driving a pump on a soft start, that was sweet....until the Thyristors on the blue phase went bang:nuts:

Have you got a lens on that has IS?

Tried it on my 500D and it is the same. Very faint. Cannot hear when the flash is down. When flash up, if i put my year to the camera and press the focus button i can hear it. Moving the camera around as it changes focus with the flash up i can hear the noise. Must be the norm!! I am slightly mad!

I am sure it is coming from the camera body. I have turned off AF and IS on the lens so it is not that. It only happens when i activate the flash. As the numbers change in the viewfinder that is when the noise comes on and goes off.

Press the * button and fire the flash, is it the same noise, I can't hear mine when changing values?

mod comment Yes, we know.

Is it the shutter? *snigger*

Yea!! :

Seriuosly though, anyone, please try it. Put the camera up to your ear and press the shutter down to focus (Obvioulsy you won't be able to see, unless you have Frankenstein blood in you) while in the 'Auto Mode' with the flash up. Can you hear a very faint noise? Thing is, i hear it all the time now that i have heard it once (No, its not sinitus!!!) ;)
