Noise Performance Help

I currently use a Nikon D300 and the noise at anything above 800 seems really bad. If I ever go to 1250 the image always ends up getting deleted because the noise is so bad. Yet when Ive done searching around the internet and looked at raw pictures untouched and on videos it looks to be able to go to 1600 without much of a problem.
It might sound stupid but I cant see why my higher iso images seem to have more noise and look so soft compared to other peoples. Im taking them at a shutter speed beyond my focal length and exposed correctly going by the cameras meter. If I was to go to 1600 Id have red dots all over the place and the image would be soft as hell. What am I doing wrong?
 
Check the exposure using the histogram and push it as far too the RHS as possible without clipping the whites. Noise will be worse if you're shots are underexposed :thumbs:
 
Something no quite right here. Sure, the D300 has been well and truly surpassed these days but you shouldn't be having such significant issues at the figures you're talking about. Do you have any examples?

Can you post of an example of what you feel to be unacceptable?
