It's the digital equivalent of grain that used to affect film photos.

If you can imagine an analogue television that has poor reception, and the fuzzy, speckly interference you would see on the picture, digital noise is a bit like that, only not quite so severe.

Noise = unwanted pink and green dots that show up in dark areas & unwanted grainy effect that show up in areas of little detail (ie a blue sky)

Noise is the same as the buzz or humming you get from an audio amplifier, hence the name. Basically, it's because amplification systems are never 100% pure and contribute some 'noise' to the system of their own. And there's a huge amount of amplification (or 'gain') that goes on to turn the tiny amount of light that is recorded by the sensor into something we can look at. And all this is analogue by the way, there's actually not much digital stuff going on in a digital camera!

As with audio, when you can only hear the noise during very quite or silent moments, noise in an image only shows up badly in dark shadow areas, or at high ISO. This is when the image-forming part of the signal is so low (ie the light is dim) that the background noise is at a similar level and therefore becomes visible.
