Noise?

Yes
I started with a Canon 400d and was quite happy for a while and started looking to update. I was origionally looking at moving up to a 50d but got sidetracked to a very low use (approx 1200 actuations) as new 1d MKII N. All has been well and I have changed lenses to a 24-70L and a 70-200L. I have recently started shooting indoors with available light and quite shocked at the amount of noise at 800 iso and above. I have thought about flash units but not sure if this is the way forward as far as distance is concerned? I'd rather not upgrade to a body with better iso capabillity but is there any other option?

Been photographing wheelchair basketball so I bumped up the iso speed to get a faster shutter speed. Not sure a tripod would help?

No, a tripod would be pretty useless. But you didn't say what you were photographing ;)

I was worried about that :( any recomendations as to what would be a good replacement body?

Or if you are stuck with your camera for basketball, why not change the way you shoot - - go for some experimental type shots....like panning (as much as you can for this type of thing), slow shutter and flash or gritty black and whites etc.

A cheaper fix might be to try some decent noise reduction software. I was always very impressed with Noise Ninja and, from memory, it wasn't silly money. You can download noise profiles specific to your camera which work very well.

Ultimately the way to go may be a change of camera body but worth trying this if, especially if you can get hold of a trial version first.

LR4 should clean up anything to 1600 quite nicely on your cam, unless you are shooting jpeg or underexposing a lot (a very common mistake in fact). I know that many people are shooting f/2 primes for indoor sports, and that also helps to get rid of nasty background. Other than that you are looking at a new 1dx, 5d3 or a used 1d4

Thanks for the advice. I use the noise reduction in LR3 so maybe time to upgrade that before I look at noise ninja? I like the 1dmk11N so don't really want to upgrade yet as I don't use it as much as I should so not sure I can justify a 5d111 or a 1d4
