Hi all,

Recently just bought a second hand Nikon 55-200mm 4-5.6 AF-S ED DX VR and the autofocus motor when i use it is substantially louder than my other 18-55mm lens that came with my camera as new. Also when it's focused it lets out a noise that couldn't be heard on the other lens.

Is this normal?

I suspect what you are hearing is actually the VR system working and not the focus motor as that should be silent. To check this, turn the VR off and see if the noise goes away.

All VR lenses (that I've used anyway) make some level of noise - some are noisier than others.

Hope that helps :)

I had a Nikon 16-85 VR that started making a slight squeak during its first couple focus movements when the camera was first turned on. The focus motor failed a few weeks later. If it doesn't have a warranty I would want to return it.

Sorry its took a while to reply as I've completely forgot about this.

You were correct, I turned the VR off and the noise completely went.

VR can be really noisy. Notice it often with my macro lens but the autofocus itself is very quiet. (I'd never call it silent though, as it isn't)

Its a weird kind of noise it sounds like a tiny fan and you can only just hear it.

Worried me to start with as i thought my lens was knacked!

I just got a 18-55mm VR and I was wondering this same thing. Will try it with out the VR on now and see what happens :)
