No
I bought the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM. And I can hear the motor which seems ok.. But then there's a crackling noise at the end of the fousing.. Does this sound right.. ? I bought it in Jessops.. and no one there knows..

I have this lens and the IS is very loud. switch it off and if it doesn't make a sound then you'll know that is it

I can hear the engine when the stabliser is on.. But as i said theres also a slight crackling noice and you can also hear the mechanism slowing down..

Does it sound a bit like a crunch as the focussing stops? I think mine sounds the same, will check when I get home if you like.
The lens doesn't use ring USM like the "L" lenses, so isn't quite as silent as those. It's a whisper compared to my nifty fifty though.

yeah it does make a bit of a crunch.. would be great if you could check yours..
thanks for the offer..

Just tried my 24-105mm with IS on and I can hear the motor wirring gently, but no crunching.

IS your lens still under warranty, you could send it in for a wee check up.

Had a play with mine this morning, and it is indeed quite noisy when focussing from 0 to infinity and back. The smaller focus adjustments don't make any noise though.
I'm not sure I'd describe it as crackling though. More like a bit of a slap as the focus ring reaches the end of its travel.
Where abouts are you based? There might be someone close by with the same lens that can help you compare.

Thanks for your replies.. Think I'm just gonna take it back.. its the only one they had left and it came out the display cabinet.. I'm not a massive fan of this lens.. Althou i think it may be my camera that doesn;t do it any justice.

Really need a lens for my trip away..(for wildlife shots etc) not really sure what to do now.. any ideas on different lenses, budget £350'ish??

you are the queen of duplicate posts.

it probably is the best lens you'll get for that money, for what you want to do with it. Take it back and but another from amazon, cheaper there anyway and you can get it delivered the next day.

the only reasons i used jessops is because i got £200 in vouchers..
Are there any other lenses you would recommend... even if i have to pay more.. ?
I also thought the 55-200 sounded like an excellent lens..

It really is a great lens. Take it back and get them to order you another one in if it has to be from Jessops.
Might be an idea to make a note of the serial number, just in case they try and flog you the same one back ;)

ha ha good thinking..

I really dont like this lens... it just hasn't grown on me.. So think i might get the 55-200.. its had great feedback..

200 will be very short for wildlife in africa, you'll need at least 300 I would imagine. There are plenty better than the 30-700 but you are looking at least double that cost I would imagine
