non auto macro extension tubes?

I am getting a bit more into macro and have a tamron 90 f2.8. I would like some extension tubes but the auto ones are £80 with the manual ones are just £8!
Can the aperture be controlled on the manual ones or are the auto tubes the way to go?

not sure on Nikon but with canon to change the aperture for manual tubes you have to:

mount the lens
set the aperture
use the DoF preview button
unmount the lens
remount the lens with the tubes attached

this may not work for Nikon/Tamron lenses though as they may open back up when unmounted

I've got both. The £8 ones are ok for what they are, good for letting you see 1:1 or thereabouts if you have no other means of macro.

When you realise you will definitely be stepping the aperture down for virtually all macro, they start to show their weakness.

If you already have a macro lens and want tubes, don't waste the £8, put it towards auto tubes.

The nikon manual tubes should have a leaver going through to allow aperture control on your D300s and S5, maybe the D90 as well? You'd still set the aperture via an aperture ring (so no G lenses), but it wouldn't be stop down metering.

I'm not exactly sure, I think the dumb tubes means it acts like an old pre-AI lens? So it'll only meter on D200 and up bodies.
Someone with more experience of nikon stuff should be able to tell you more specifically.

Manual tubes are a pain in the ass - put the £8 towards some auto tubes and save yourself some frustration.
