I usually send large prints off to a lab but for the occassional 7x5 or A4 i print using my Canon printer. Question then is how good are other compatible inks over canon branded. Any recommendations to keep the cost down?

Personnally, I wouldn't use compatable inks, have had disappointed results in past with an Epson.

Stick with genuine and good quality paper

The main prob with ink is, longevity. I have carried out tests with different makers inks.like leaving on the window cill in bright sunlight for a month. the very cheap ink (unknown maker) didn`t fare well. Third party ink of named standard seems ok.

Tried using tesco inks for a while for general printing and even that clogged up the printer heads. I wouldn't do it again.

I was using the £1-a-go Epson cartridges off Fleabay in my Epson printer, they're fine for printing text but awful for photos, plus they clogged up the print heads :shake:

Only genuine Canon ink in my new wee Canon IP1000 now :)

Tried a compatible cart in a Canon - colours were off and the cheapo ink faded fast. Never again! Buying carts from 7dayshop (or Tesco [who sometimes stock the CLI-8 C/M/Y packs with 50 sheets of GP-501 paper at a good price]) helps reduce the costs from omigod! to bluddyell!

Totally agree! avoid all unbranded/other branded inks! I have an Epson, put non-epson ink in it and it just clogs up!

I/my parents also used to have a Samsung B&W Only printer (bought about 2 years ago) was designed to print lots of word documents quickly and cheaply, but I discovered that it could print the most amazing B&W prints too!

oh how I loved that printer. untill I was very stupid and put in some "other brand" ink cartridge... since then its only printed with loads of stripey lines, and everything has been done to get it fixed -nothing works!

-also, "unbranded" ink cartridges tend to be used/recycled ones that used to be "official" makes. They basically open them up and put a lower-quality ink in them and sell it on. I have never bought one of these that has worked properly.:bang:

Well that seems unanimous then, i'll stick with the wallet busting originals. what about paper fellas? Have been using Canons photo glossy plus was looking at ilford, any other reasonably priced options?

I use Calumet's. It's called Brilliant and although it doesn't come with a profile I've not had a problem using the printer's own profile.

Olmec are not bad and if you have a really special one for the wall http://www.hahnemuehle.com/

Paper? I use either Canon's own brand or Ilford Galerie for "good" prints but have been known to use cheapo stuff from Lidl for contact sheets and short term stuff (not sure how long the prints last and some of the cheapo papers have a colour cast).

I use Jet Tec and have done for years now in my Epson printers - http://www.jettec.com/inkjetcartridges.asp - no problems with clogged heads, but then I don't seem to ever have problems with clogged heads when everyone else does, so who knows. Longevity of it isnt great, will fade in direct sunlight, but think that is also partly down to the paper.

I use a bulk ink system in my Epson and it's great for prints up to A4. It will fade though but most of the pictures I print are just for myself and get replaced after a few months so longevity isn't an issue.

I've used Jet-tec inks in the past and found them quite good and much cheaper than Epson inks but I never had any problems with cheap inks though I did have a problem with my first bulk ink system and used Jet-tec cartridges until I eventually went back to the new bulk system that I got as a replacement.

The Epson 'likes' some papers better than others so experiment with several types. I can't remember which type it didn't like but the difference in quality is very noticeable.
