Non OEM Batteries

I'm looking into getting spare batteries for my camera.

The OEM ones are the Nikon EL-EL3e ones.

Obviously there is a lot of NON OEM versions of this battery on ebay and amazon.

So i'm just after some personal experience using aftermarket batteries. Are they safe to use?
 
Hi Dan, there's been a lot of discussion here in the past on this subject, and I think I'd be summarising the argument if I said that the majority feel why buy an expensive camera and put a suspect battery in it?.

I'm sure a lot get away with it, but the only time I tried it (many years ago before I was on this forum) it wasn't a success, and they were from 7 Day shop.
 
Well thats my line of thinking ultimately. But just wondered if anyone had found good ones to use.

Edit: Oh and i did a search before starting this thread but couldnt find anything. So maybe i was typing the wrong thing.
 
I've got loads of 3rd party batteries for Sony cams. I paid between £9 and about £15 for them. I think I've had 1 that wouldn't work on the day I got it and 1 that died within a month or so. The rest (5 or 6) have all worked perfectly.

I don't mind paying £30 for an OEM battery, but I'm not paying £60+ when I can get 4 or 5 3rd party ones for the same price.

was going to say 7dayshop (been using their oem in 20D and 5Dmk2 for years with no issues, they report actuations etc) but theyve temporarily suspended sales of battery until they can find a way around this stupid royal mail ban on shipping batteries..

I've got 2 7dayshop batteries for my D3 and so far I've not had any problems. The only think I have noticed is that after fully charging them they only say 98% in the camera. They still last for ages and I've not had any freezing or slowdown with them.

Didnt know anything about this?! :| :shrug: What happened? Have any other retailers suffered?
 
Thanks for the replies. I'll keep an eye on 7dayshop and see when they start selling DSLR batteries again.
 
I use the Hahnel batteries now - still significantly cheaper than OEM but not so cheap as to make you wonder if their contruction might be a bit suspect. For me they make a good compromise. Had a couple of "cheapies" a while back - were OK for a couple of months and then started to struggled to hold a charge for any length of time.

Available from Wex and no sign of shipping problems with the ban..........
 
I've got over a dozen 3rd party batteries and have used them for Canon 550D,650D, 60D, 7D, 5D2 and 5D3 bodies and I've never had a problem with any. I've used the batteries in both the camera bodies and grips in pairs, and I've also used 3rd party grips on all the bodies aboev too. The grip from the 550D also fits the 650D so I've had that one for around 2 years now and the grip and all the batteries are still working as well as they ever did. All the batteries and grips have been bought on ebay and I've never paid more than a tenner for any of the batteries (LP-E6) and about a fiver for the others (Lp-E8).
 
The first thing I do when I get a new camera is to buy a few 3rd party batteries for it.
so far I have only had two canon own brand batteries fail, never a look alike.
 
This is reassuring to hear that people are using them without issues.

I plan to get a grip and a few batteries for both my cameras, so can't afford to be shelling out Nikon prices. So will give the 3rd party ones off amazon a try.
 
I have 4 decoded oem battery's for my 7d. They are great I only buy them because I refuse to pay canons price for a battery I use them all the time I still have my official canon one inch bag that never gets used. Never had a problem with the ones I got also tells the battery percentage on the camera and seems to be very accurate
 
Got 4 of these from amazon, have been fine, wouldnt know the difference myself. 25 reviews, of which 23 5 star.

I've been using 3rd party batteries for years and never had a problem with them. In some cases they've actually lasted longer than the branded ones supplied with the camera. I've always used 7 day shop ones, the oldest one I have was purchased in 2006 when I got my FZ7 and its still going strong.
