After last night's shenanigans with a Jessops wobbly tripod, I'm looking at tripods again (I've looked at them several times in the past). The problem is for the number of times I really use a tripod I'm too mean (read poor) to spend a lot on one. :D

I've looked at several of the Chinese options on eBay but not sure whether the quality is likely to be much better than I have with my Jessops one. In fairness, the legs etc. with the incumbent Jessops one are fine, it's the head (which is not detachable) is rather flimsy, so there's movement in it.

Has anyone any experience with these?

You can pick them up for around £30 quid or so, including a ball head which would be nice - or is this simply wishful thinking on my part, and I need to set my sights a little higher? :thinking:
 
Dave this frequently comes up on here and I always give the same answer....buy cheap and buy twice

The whole point of a tripod is to provide a stable and secure base, cheap ones struggle to do that. The head is also important as well as some are still loose and wiggle around even when you've tightened them to the max. I found this out the hard way :bonk:

I use a Manfrotto 055PROB, its no lightweight but reasonably priced and does a great job, I recently used it at Whitby in fairly high winds and it didn't budge at all.

Get one fit for purpose from the off and you no longer have to worry about your tripod
 
I would second the recommendation of an 055 - I've got a CF version, (prior to that I had the aluminium 190xProB) .

RedSnapper seem well regarded amongst the 'budget' ranges, you certainly used to be able to get a 10% discount from them fro being a TP member, not sure if this is still the case.
 
I hated my 055 :razz: as it just wouldn't allow me to get the positioning I wanted. Not to single it out too much as I'd find any conventional centre column through the legs design very limiting and frustrating.

I gave mine away and replaced it with a BENBO with additional centre column bracket.

I'm not a great lover of tripods and in fact I hate using them but when I do want to use one I want to be able to get the positioning I want and the likes of the BENBO and UNILOC allow so many posibilities over conventional designs. Besides positioning another plus is that my Benbo is actually more stable than my Manfrotto was.

I'd never go back to a conventional centre column through the legs tripod now and would recommend that anyone wanting a tripod for flexible outdoor use or even indoor stuff too should take a look at Benbo and Uniloc and any lookalikes.
