Noob question re: Sigma 10-20

Had a little spare cash at the end of the month so grabbed a Sigma 10-20 for my 400D. Had a play around with it - wow!, so much space to fill. Anyway, probably a very dumb question but what are the markings/scales on the body of the lens for? Not the 10-20 scale but further toward the front of the lens? Probably very obvious but :shrug:

Obviously, as I don't know what they are for, chances are pretty much 100% that I'm not using the lens properly so some help would be much appreciated.

If you mean the markings in the small window, they are the focus distance in meters and ft (0.24n to infinity).
