This is close to where I grew up but it was never as peaceful as this. Like all the area you cannot get far from the influence of the coal industry with an old rope hauled still used as a footpath. This brought coal from Backworth down to the Tyne at North Shields adjacent to the still active Fish Quay. The winding stream known as Powburn was until recently a boggy uncared for part of the park.
