Not Genuine Battery Charger and Battery

Hi all

My first post I think, but I have been queitly reading posts in the background for a while and 'upping' my knowledge (slowly) as I go! Turning out to be another expensive hobby!:'(

I have tried to search as I am sure its a common newbie question, but I have had no joy, but are the none genuine chargers worth buying? I mean will they do the job. There is a big difference in price.

What I guess the same applies to the battries. I assume that they don't hold charge for as long...but they must be ok for a few hours at least.

some people will say only buy genuine batteries and pay £50ish, .. i have copies for back-up only and paid £7 each ... and they perform just as good as the genuine Canon ones,
i'm sure someone will come along and tell you otherwise but i'm happy i didnt spend £43 too much on a spare battery

I am an vid car enthusiast, and I would say that I have more faith in a branded battery (Bosch for exmaple) then an motor factors own brand! There are arguments that they are the same thing and you are paying for the branding etc. but I don't want to take that risk. I will pay the extra for the reputation all day long and the comfot of knowing that I will not be let down.

I am assuming a camera will be the same! I was just wondering, thats all.

I could not see the difference outright, thats all really!!!

I gues the same question now also applies to lens hood! Genuine canon is £25 and a copy is in the region of £5! Big difference really! Guess I might just try and use both, and develop my own opinions.

One thing to bear in mind is that Nikon, Canon, et al don't make batteries.

I have used - and still do use - a mixture of Nikon and 3rd party batteries and have never had an issue with any of them.
 
In my experience, 3rd party batteries are as good as originals when they are purchased and sometimes even surpass the originals capacity wise.

However in my experience they are always the ones to fail first or stop holding a charge (with equal use).

You can argue that you can buy 5 or more 3rd party ones for the price of an original, and you'd be right.

For my main camera, a 7D, I bought a genuine backup battery and for my astrophotography, a Canon 1100D, I bought a decent quality 3rd party one i.e. not a £1 one, more like £5 from 7dayshop.
 
Also, if you buy sensible rather than cheap, you get some excellent third party offerings.

With regards to lens hoods, there are numerous debates over should you pay extra for a genuine hood. My only comment would be if you do buy a 3rd party lens hood, make sure it's a matt black finish on the inside, otherwise you can get reflections - a lot of the genuine Canon hoods are flock lined on the inside...

As Richard said above "if you buy sensible rather than cheap, you get some excellent third party offerings".
 
I've got 8 LP-E6 and 8 LP-E8 3rd party batteries and they are used in 3rd party grips and have never had any problems with batteries or grips. Some of the LP-E8's are over 2 years old now and still keep their charge as well as the originals. They were bought for a 550D and transferred to the wifes 650D when she got it.

As for hoods, most of my lenses have come with them but I've bought a cou[le of originals for my 50 f1.4 and 85 f1.8, but I've had 3rd party hoods for other kit lenses which I've since sold and they seem to work as well as the Canon ones.
