I bought a Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro, i tried it today and i was surprised how far away i had to be, to be in focus close in on an object on Manual Focus.
There's a switch that says LIMIT/FULL, can somebody please tell me what the difference is please and i was surprised it didn't get more detail bigger in the frame, btw i haven't seen images yet on a pc because my 8yr HDD is defunct ! :'(

Don't actually know this lens much but I would imagine it has a min focus distance of about 12 inches..... How far away were you?

The LIMIT/FULL switch limits the focus range in AF mode. If you engage it when focused toward infinity it will not try to focus close or vice versa. This speeds up the AF as it does not try to hunt through the full range.

For MF it should be set to FULL.

Thanks Mike, i'll have a practise

Macro is about magnification not being able to shove the lens right up against something. The 105 has a minimum distance to subject of less than 6" and that close at f2.8 you will have very very shallow DOF.

It's a cracking lens just takes a bit of getting used to.

Both of these shot were of the same spider and whilst not great they give some idea of what can be done.
