I want to buy a new lens, and I am not sure which one to plump for.

The Choices are the Canon 200mm f2.8, or the Canon 70-200 f4.0 or the Canon 70-200 IS f4.0 (Cant afford the 2.8 70-200)

Does anyone have any knowledge / experiences on the above lenses, and which one is a general preference.

Apart from the obvious zoom being an advantage over the prime are there any pros / cons to either lenses

The 200mm is the sharpest of all and works with both 1.4x and 2x TCs at 280mm and 400mm quite well so I would go with that one (and I did in the past).

On the other hand it is not a zoom so if you HAVE to have a zoom then the 70-200 f4 IS is your best choice.
 
What do you use it for, if you need 200mm + then the 200mm f/2.8 is unbeatable however it's not much use if you need 70mm regularly unless you're good at running backwards

Ha ! I cant even run forward little own run backwards. I have lenses up to 105mm plus a 150mm macro. 200mm seems a huge jump with no real cover. I want to increase my range and dont seek the lens for any particular purpose.
 
150mm to 200mm is not a huge jump especially if you have an 1.4x TC to use with the 150mm but it looks like you prefer a zoom so go with the 70-200mm f4 IS if you can afford it as the IS is really helpful at the long end.
