Yes
I have just come into a reasonable sum in the way of a christmas bonus and i would like to put it towards my next photography purchase.

The problem is i have a wish list but not sure how i should weight the priority of each item.

My current kit list is as follows,
canon 400d
sigma 18-50 f2.8
canon 50 f1.8
canon 70-200L
430ex flash.

What doesnt help is i have no one specific subject i am interested, which means there is a vast array of equipment i would like to get my grubby little mits on. :naughty:

So my wish list is....

A canon 10-22, this i can afford outright.

A new computer that's main use would be for editing and procesing, i think the amount i have would get me 90% there for the spec i was looking at, minus screens.

A 1.4 TC.

And finally a new body, possibly a 7D. I would still have to save up the bulk of the cost though so it would be a long wait yet.

I am leaning towards the 10-22 at the moment. There is a likelyhood i will be offered a job as the official photographer for a nightclub in the new year which i think a wide angle lens will be a real benefit for. I am thinking it would be an idea to work towards this area so that my hobby starts to bring in funds that can be put towards future purchaces. But my mind is still far from made up.

So imagine you are inthe same position, what do you think would bring the most benefit and be the next logical progression?

Sit on the cash until you know what you NEED. We all have wants but splash out on a want and you're that much short should you then decide that you really NEED something.

why not a set of wireless flash and shutter triggers, the wireless flash kit has transformed the way i think about light, and helped out no end! Flash In The Pan is a member on here and sells all the gear (look in for sale section, advertisers), the only reason i didn't buy from him was i got baught a set!

A decent website if you havnt got one already?
That is a very good suggestion actually. But i don't think it is something that will benefit me at this time, though certainly something to think of for the future.

I know i called it a wish list, but i do NEED all these things, honest.

I do have a couple of bits i want to get from Flash In The Pan actually, but nothing too much. I did recently get myself a studio lighting set up actually, i forgot to mention that.

I think 10-22 would be a nice buy. For night clubs I would definitely look at Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 instead (coz its f/2.8 not f/4), or 12-24mm f/4 as a cheaper alternative. I am very pleased with Tokinas - sharp and nearly indestructible.

Next I would look at new MAC, and more importantly a good screen. Dell make some nice affordable S-IPS panels (sadly only the 30" Apple one looks any good). For professional output it is a must.

Canon 1.4x is very good and sharp, but 70-200 f/4 is not the best lens to use it with. The sharpness starts to slightly degrade past 160mm, and at 200mm+1.4x the drop in IQ is visible. 150mm+1.4x give excellent results, but that is only 230mm f/5.6. Hence mine stays on the shelf most of the time. If you had a prime like 200mm f/2.8 or 300mm f/4 then TC would be more useful.

7D is expensive, so I'd put money elsewhere first. 40D, 1D2 or 5D mk1 may be a better start in terms of IQ, high ISO performance and price ratio.

I would put it on a decent PC/Mac and software for editing.

I have the 400D too and if it was me looking at buying something new then i would be looking to upgrade my camera to take real advantage of the good quality lens you already have.

Or get a new camera like said and save a little and get a second hand lens that you want.

I think the 7d is a huge step up... Its streets ahead of my 400d. Its also the most expensive! I would suggest a few small things ... maybe remotes for the OFF camera flash?.. I've had loads of fun with those... You could then keep yourself occcupied until the 7d was affordable.. Incidentally I used the Canon 10-22mm and the Sigma 10-20mm and I think the sigma is sharper! this test saved me about 180 quid...:)

The Tokina is a good shout, i did't realise it was a constant f2.8.
For my nightclub stuff i generally don't shoot below f4 anyway, but i is cheaper than the canon and from some of the reviews i have read, better in some respects.

I would like to compare the two before i buy though, but i can't find anywhere that has one. Jessops don't deal with toina ans the only other shop i know have within my area doesn't have a canon fit one in stock.
