Not too happy with 50mm - should I go 35mm?

So I have the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and have owned it for about a year now. In that time I have found myself more frequently leaving it behind because it's a tad frustrating to compose with. I use a Canon 7D so obviously the 50mm focal range because some thing like 80mm - great for portraits, not so much general use! I'm looking for a prime for general use because I know how sharp they can be and how much light they let in! So is it worth me trading in my 50mm for a 30mm or a 35mm - and if so, which model? Is the 35mm f/1.4L really that good (to justify the price tag)? Let me know! :)

I found the same, perhaps look at the 35mm f2 or 28mm f1.8 as a option, and a lot cheaper than the L.
 
If you can hold out for a bit, sigma have a new version of their 30mm1.4 on the way. If the new 35 fx lens is anything to go on, it'll be tasty.
 
Buy the 35 F2, it will give you chance to see if that is a focal length you like.

If it is, I know the 35mm F1.4 L is superb, but it's a lot heavier than the 50. There is also the Sigma 35mm F1.4 out now.

I tried the Canon 28mm F1.8 and it always felt a little wide. I also tried a number of copies of the Sigma 30mm F1.4 and the one that was good was superb. A thoroughly enjoyable lens to use!

Another option might be to try the new Canon 40mm pancake lens ???

Can be picked up quite cheap and easy to sell on if you find this isn't for you either ...
 
I have a 28 f1.8 which was excellent on crop. Conversely on full frame I'm less happy with it and feel its just a bit too wide, been thinking of chopping it for a 35mm f/2! :)
 
I have the 35mm f/2 and its a brilliant little lens. Great focal length and pretty much on par with the Canon 85mm f/1.8 when it comes to IQ. You might not feel the need for the L if you try the f/2, it's lovely.

Ah, but I already own a 24-105 f/4L that covers that range... Really after a prime. The Sigma 35 is definitely appealing. Concerned about how many bad copies are floating about tho!!

Stop faster - you'll probably still have the same issue with the 35. Not heard of anyone with a bad copy of the 35

i diddnt like the 50mm on a crop body either. it wasnt wide enough and at the same time wasnt long enough if that makes sense
