Noticable improvement in 40D over 350D

I am considering upgrading my body to a 40D. I am just looking for some advice (read encouragement!) really as I am not sure whether I would notice that much difference.

I like shooting Macro, Motorsport, some nature shots and when I invest in a Sigma 10-20mm will start on a lot more landscape stuff. I tend to not take that many indoor pics but will try out some low light longer exposure stuff with landscapes.

I will also be using the camera for work - dental photography which if i'm honest the 350D does more than adequately.

Current lenses are :

350D kit EFS non IS 18-55mm
Sigma 50mm EX Macro
Sigma 70-300 APO DG
Sigma Ring Flash

Aside from the obvious increase in MP (10.1 plays 8.2) has anyone made the same jump and noticed massive differences.

I cant decide whether I am just wanting a new toy of if I can justify it to myself ( and the wife!)

All help / advice much appreciated

Andy

Nowhere local seems to have a 40D in, would it be fairly similar to handle to the 50D?

My first DSLR was the 350D, and I made the jump to the 40D as my second DSLR (then another as a second body), for me it was worth it, the increase in the physical size was ideal as I always found the 350D to small (even with a grip), then you have the better build quality, as you mentioned the FPS and the File size, you also have some custom shooting modes, you also have the second LCD on the top which I found useful, and the dial on the back for altering the settings (instead of using just the wheel by the shutter button and other buttons).

I did the same change and never looked back the 40D is great still got it.
I recon the 40D is better at high ISO's too

I moved from a 300D to a 40D.
Part of the reason was the better functionality, larger screen on the back and I hadn't bought any goodies for some time.

I think it is a great upgrade. The 350 and 400 were smaller than the 300 and with my big shovels, not really practical.

Do it, you won't regret it ....

I too went from 350D to 40D (and still have and still use the 350D). As said above many improvements, bigger screen, bigger viewfinder, faster fps, dial rather than buttons on the back. As for picture quality etc I honestly cannot tell them apart, even at high ISO I see very little improvement with the 40D. So functionality is big improvement, picture quality not really much (in my opinion). I dont regret getting the 40D at all, but the 350D is a stunning little camera (and seemingly better built than my 40D).

Ah, that's put a spanner in the works!

Thanks for the honest advice though. And thanks to everyone for helping.

I think I will pop into local camera shop and try one out (prob a 50D as it sounds close). Sounds like I may be better investing in some better glass first but I'm an impatient b****r so may end up doing both!

I went from a 300D (my daughter now has it and loves it) to a 40D, don't regret it all, the bigger size feels better, the faster continuous shooting is ideal for motorsport.

Don't think you'll regret it - although your wallet may :)

The 40D is more responsive, has better focussing, a bigger rear screen and I think it is better built and more rugged. Also a degree of weatherproofing, better battery life, oh, and the shutter noise sounds better.

I have recently upgraded to a 40D from a 350D and can agree with everything that has been said on this thread.

I found the biggest change was that the colours the 40D can produce are a lot more vibrant and more accurate than my 350D, for landscape and nature photography it is a big improvement and worth the upgrade.

I too made the move from 350D to 40D and had doubts about the benefits at the time. No regrets though, a league apart. IQ, build and operation were all much better. The 350D felt very toy-like compared to the 40D.

I've since moved from 40D to 5Dmk2 and had similar doubts. Likewise they were equally unjustified.

In short, the 40D (or 50D) are great bodies. Don't hesitate, you'll see a tangible benefit.
