Nottinghamshire's Chief of Police more powerful than Parliament?

Yes
Saw this earlier today.

"Nottinghamshire Police is recording incidents such as street harassment, verbal abuse, unwanted physical approaches and taking photographs without consent within the hate crime definition."

As far as I am aware English law states that no one has the right of privacy in a public place as regards being photographed and to change this requires an Act of Parliament. apparently the Chief Constable considers that he is above this and can make up his own rules as he goes along.

His English language skills aren't too good either, it should be 'are' not 'is'.

I don't understand.
They're taking photographs without consent, which they, and we, are allowed to do.
Where is the problem?

he hasn't changed the law, just what he records things as, so it will effect the number of hate crimes on record in his area. not people being arrested

Although the reports in the Independent, Guardian and Telegraph mention "photographs without consent" , the latest statement I can find on the website of the Nottinghamshire police does not -

However, and earlier statement does -

I wonder if the reference to photographs is

(a) about cases which are really harrassment (eg pursuing someone and repeated taking photos of them, continually waiting outside their house and photographing them), or
(b) someone has pointed out that photographing someone in a way does not constitute harassment is legal.

Dave

BTW the Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire is a "she"

Sorry I didn't realise the Chief Constable was a woman, the report I saw made it seem as if it were a man.

As regards the change in the statement I strongly suspect that I have been far from the only one to notice it and someone has had a word in her ear.

I can imagine severa very obvious circumstances where "taking photos without consent" could be a form of harassment within a hate crime definition. If you can't, I suggest you think about it some more.

I do wish people that own cameras wouldn't get so hung up on their "rights", there's a responsibility not to be a dick that goes along with them.

I saw this yesterday and nearly posted it to give the anti-pc brigade an apoplectic fit :). Have to say it wasn't the photo bit that I expected to cause a furore but the wolf whistling and unwanted sexual approaches.

Nottinghamshire Police - proper noun, singular.

If you want to be pedantic, do try and get it right.

Stop doing it then. ;) :D

AFFECT the number not EFFECT

AFFECT the number not EFFECT
thank you Mr pedantic, is it to make yourself feel superior you pull people up? because I cant see how it is any of your business, and you obviously understood what my meaning was.
i don't spot that sort of error, I am dyslexic so if spell check doesn't pull me up I always think its correct, it takes me a long time to error check my posts.

I actually like to help people at least once a day. If you feel insulted well that is yoir privelege. Sadly, in life, many are judged for their use of language.
My correction was not wrapped in any criticksm but as you say I am a pedant (or Mr Pedant) and you are Dyslexic. Life can be cruel.

hi Hugh whilst i wont get drawn into an argument over this, life is to short and it just isn't important. if you wanted to help you could of sent a pm. I can spell check and grammar check very well, but this is a social forum to relax on not a dissertation to be graded. The interesting thing is you don't seem to spell check your own posts, including your reply to me;) and btw your spelling in the thread about the bombing could use looking at. o well have a good day nik

Your issue was the incorrect word as opposed to a spelling error.

As to my sending me a PM - you are absolutely correct - for which I stand admonished.

In fact you could have the whole moral high ground but that would have only been fully accomplished... had you sent me a PM.

3 words from me and all this.... I feel we are life long friends now [emoji3]

2 women argueing opposite sides,
basically one said she felt threatened by it, the other flattered.

But not everybody who take street photographer is an "dick",but their does seem this attitude among some photographer that they are,and isn't the Chief Constable also taking a risk of starting moral policing, which happen in Islamic counties .

This isn't about street photography.

Just ****ing think about it for ten minutes. Don't assume it's about a/ you, or b/ photographers in general.

OK, who had post 28 as the post where Islam gets a mention? :)

The reason i said this is because i no of a policewoman, who believed it was her job to stop all street photographer, "on her patch".
Also it was part of her statement "photograph without consent", which is part street photograph, will be seen by some people as your not allow to take their photo without consent.

Also this is photographer forum, subject that people think will affect photographer, will be brought up

Getting back to the original point - I had the exact same thought. The CC of Notts can only change what their Force records things as internally, as the definitions of offences are unchanged, as are crime recording standards. It's almost as if it's all just a bit of PR for the Chief and will have zero real world impact or affect/effect ((n)).

Maybe if the CC's of all Force's concerned themselves with police work rather than public relations, public relations wouldn't need improving so much.

You missed the "yoir"... Both typos more than incorrect spellings or use of language.
