I have been looking into posting some pics on alamy and also a web site I am creating. What I can't get my head around is the following

1) If I go to a open track day at Oulton park/silverstone etc and take photo's can these be sold on alamy and my website????

2) If i attend a local rugby match and take photo's can these be used.

3) Are there any limitations when taking photo's in national parks???

This may seem a silly question for some but I have been reading up on it for the last 2 hours and can't find anything :(
I am sure I have missed something.

I am sure you guys/girls will point me in the right direction :)
Thanks in advance for the help.

There's a few questions together here and I have a copy of a guide to photographers rights that might answer some for you. I've only got it as a PDF file and I can't remember the web site I got it from though. If you want a copy just PM me with your email address and I'll send it to you.

With alamy you'll run into problems with any shots that include brand names/logos/etc so that will pretty much rule out the sports shots. There may also be restrictions on commercial use as part of the conditions of entry.

National parks might have restrictions for commercial use and ask you to apply for a licence of some sort first, ie pay a fee.

The simple answer is to check with the people concerned, the ground/track/park/alamy and ask them.

If you attend a race meeting there is always a disclaimer in the programme stating that basically, while you can take photos for yourself, all images remain the property of the circuit/event promoter, and you can't sell them. You can get into quite big trouble I think for flogging images taken from spectator areas without accreditation.

How this would apply to trackdays I don't know, since they're just private citizens driving mainly road cars on a circuit. You might get into trouble showing peoples numberplates

And has just been said below, if you're serious about selling your images, you really need a DSLR and at least a half decent lens.

I'm sure some of the motorsport brigade here, like Minimangler, should be able to help you out re the legalities. Not sure you'll get too many sellable pics with an S5800 though......

Thanks mate, PM sent :)

People will tell you that's a crap lens (which it is in the grand scheme of things), but nearly everything on my Flickr has been taken with it, and I've had two shots published, so you can get a fairly decent photo out of it. I've just sold mine for an upgrade to something bigger and hopefully better.

This is where I am confused. I went to a karting race, paid £7 to park and was given a programme. No where in the programme is there a disclaimer or anything to do with taking photo's.
The following weekend I went to Oulton park to see a friend in a open track day. As Matt will tell you, you can just drive in, park up and walk around taking shots where ever you like. Nobody asks questions and there is also no record you have even been on the premises????
What happens in these circumstances????

I agree, even though I now have a dslr which I am learning to use I will still be carring around the fuji :) It has given some great shots so far if the conditions are correct and you play around with it alittle in manual mode :)

Well the trackdays aren't technically spectator events, as it isn't a 'sporting' event as such. With the kart race, I don't know. I've never been to a kart meeting, but if there isn't a disclaimer I'm guessing the circuit can't kick off on you, as they haven't actually said you can't take pictures and sell them, have they?

I have taken photos at trackdays before, just as practice, but I don't know where you'd stand with selling them TBH. At race meetings it's a no-no unless you have accreditation.

Same here, I have been using track days as practice, but over the last 6 months or so I have a few pics which I would like to list on my site. Looks like a grey area???
The karting race is really not a problem as I would ask the organiser anyway as I go there for the fun and don't want to cause any bad feeling etc with them.

Cant sell pictures from Oulton Park trackday. MSV hold all rights to picture taken there and you cant sell them. Also if the official photographer from that day gets wind of this then he can kick off.

It really isnt worth it.

Another thing is trackday photographers have to pay £100 to be there as an officail photogrpaher. If you are steling there business, like i said, they will kick off.

Cheers Matt, I was hoping you would know about Oulton Park :)
At least oulton park offers a great place to practise your photography skills, I have to say I have a good time every time I have been there :)

No worries, I always have a blast when I am there. Another great thing is I always end up talking to someone who is good to talk to/a good contact :D

I can't see how they can stop you selling your images from a trackday as long as your not selling them at the circuit the official photographer sells his there thats what he pays for, i can see what your saying about racing, but images on this forum have been sold and published, so might be a big grey area, plus has Msv got the time to be trawling web sites looking for the odd picture, just my two pence worth..
