I've just bitten the bullet and ordered a Katz eye!

I'm not sure what scares me more. the fact that I'm going to be working so close to my CCD and prism or if I get stung for VAT and my wife finds the deliver note before I do! :D

It's a piece of cake Stu...once you've done it once you'll wonder why it worried you.
Don't panic about the CCD either.....you can't get near it until you've broken the mirror :D
 
You'll get stung for VAT and handling, have ~£27 cash ready by the front door - it should be cash on delivery.

Installation is easy as long as you're not the clumsy sort. I've done a D60, D90 and D300s, just as long as you can see which way the retaining wire clips in you'll be fine. Hope you've got a decent pair of soft-tipped tweezers already, else go find some. A face mask to stop you breathing directly into the body is also advisable.
 
Weird, I only got my D300s screen a couple of weeks back with only the usual retention wire prodder.
 
Are these screens so good that they are worth the money?

Ah, my mistake. The first K-E I ordered didn't come with any tools but the later ones have both had the tweezer tool.....maybe you use tweezers in addition to that gubbins.

Yes, if you need critical focus. That said, I've installed a cheaper screen in a D60 made by cutting down a SLR split prism (struggling to find the site right now). For a cheap body I'd be tempted to install a cheap screen, though the Katzeyes are easier to use (bigger areas of ground glass and split-prism, higher contrast periphery, etc).

Nope, it's like a small set of tweezers with a flat end. I suspect that the Nikon ones are different to the Canon ones....it depends how the screens are retained.

What are these screens like in practice - metering wise. I shoot in manual and rely on the meter's accuracy. I use a lot of M42 lenses on my 50D and have been struggling to get sharp shots recently, I have checked the diopter adjustment a couple of times but still getting soft shots, in lower light especially.

I've read that these screens can affect metering, and although you can compensate for that I would rather not have to, also do they make the viewfinder darker still (which is already a potential problem when using manual lenses when you close the aperture down)?
 
They do meter differently and with a varying amount between evaluative and spot. There are two versions available and choice is really based on the max aperture of the lenses you intend to use...one will make the viewfinder darker but is more accurate when used with faster lenses.

Sounds like they must be different kits then. The Nikon kits seem to just come with a small two-pronged pokey apparatus for disengaging and engaging the retaining wire.

Cool. Thanks for posting that but I don't own a Nokin! (I'm being humouresly dyslexic! :D)

I have a confession I work in the nano technology lab. do far more fiddly things than this with equipment that costs hunderds of thousands. My camera is only worth £300. the only diffrence being its MY camera! :D

We haven't dissucssed the much more scary problem of what happens when my wife answers the door to find a delivery man damanding £27! :D

Yeah, the handling fee galls me every time..what was that $50 upfront for then? :bang:

Looks like the Canon folk get better tools...you aren't going to get the screen in-place with just the pokey tool :razz:
