Hi all its me again, sorry to ask such silly questions but as the intro says "no question is stupid" although I feel it.

Ok here we go, in my last post I was talking about the Canon 550D which my brother brought the other week and had every intension of buying one today, so before I took the plunge I popped into 4 different shops and had a chat with the sales people who were all very helpfull and polite, I wont name, names but now Im confused, so I am now going to leave it upto the good people on the talk photography forum, the real people who know what is what and know a good bargain when they see one.

So here we go, £1000 budget, I want a decent spec camera that I can learn photography with, one that comes with a decent starter lens, Im not bothered about how many pixles it has as I dont want to blow up photo's to poster size or anything like that, Im not bothered about it taking video as I have a top of the range high def video camara, I would like the 7 frames per second burst shooting or better which ever the case may be, and in your opinions the best deal around at the moment.

So there we have it guys, I have 4 -5 really good proffessional photo shops in Swindon where I live and I will go with the majority and take with thanks any advice and help given, I will post my decision and let you all know, the reason I am doing it this way is that certain shops like to sell certain camaras so this will be an independant view of things.

You seem keen on the 550D so what if anything has changed your mind?

Hi Tony, as for independant view's, Nikon users will tell you Nikon are the best and Canon say Canon are tops. Also what is your budget?. If you have got any camera's in mind you can go to www.dpreview.com go to buying guide and you can do side by side comparison's, I used this myself when I was deciding on a Canon 550D or the Nikon D5000, which I eventually went for and then I joined TP and noticed in the forums that a lot of 550D owners were having problems and some of them had died, the cameras not the people....LOL.

If the 550D is calling to you then go with it. There have been people on here who have fancied a certain camera, changed their minds and bought something else and regretted it, so maybe the 550D is the one for you.

Perhaps one thing to look out for with high fps cameras is whether or not their focusing system can keep up. 7fps+ can be good in case of blinking etc but if using for tracking fast moving targets then your auto focus may not be able to keep up.

Just a thought!

It's no good asking us, we bought the cameras we did because we like them ( for purely personal and subjective reasons)

Buy the camera you can afford
That feels best in your hands and has a control and menu system that feels most intuitive to you.

As for Nikon I'm sure someone will be along soon to give you an idea of whats available :D

Nah, As soon as they read the start of the second paragraph, they will loose interest! :D

As one previous poster said, why have you lost interest in the 550d? Some good deals out there on this model!
Have you held it? Did it feel good/right? If you really wanted it, you would have bought it there and then!

What did they say?

Anyway, IMO if you want to record video, you won't do better than a 550D. If you don't, then maybe a 50D (or if you want to save money, a second-hand 40D) would be a better purchase.

The question you are asking is a subjective one. Only you can decide. In terms of image quality, there's not much to choose between them frankly.

So, things like a fold-out LCD vs high frame rate (why do you want that? restricts choice) vs a big hi-res LCD vs a small light body vs a bigger and more solid semi-pro body, and so on.

If it was my £1k, I'd go to the for sale/wanted section here and get a Canon 40D and 17-55 f/2.8 lens. That's what I used very happily for a couple of years before I went to full frame, and I used that one fantastic lens for almost everything. Sold the two for just under £1k in mint condition.

But that would be just the start, and I'd look to buy a 10-22 and a 70-300 as and when, a decent flash of course (or two) and then maybe a fast prime or something to do macro with. In other words, £1k wouldn't get everything.

And we've not even started on bags and tripods and studio gear and the computer/software side etc etc etc.

I'll jump in and recommend a s/h 40D too. Lovely cameras that should give you a good grounding to get you started. Excellent quality kit with lots left over for a nice lens too.

p.s. - Envious as hell at you having 4 or 5 shops in your area. It's a two hundred mile round trip to get to one (decent) shop from here.

Hi Tony

As above really, what made you change your mind over the 550D ??

Camera's are a personnal thing and what one person loves, another won't.

If your not after video function the 50D (or s/h 40D) is a belter of a camera to get, but I have heard very good things about the 550D, so don't think you'd be disappointed with whatever you choose.

Don't forget the lens can make a world of difference, so poss buying the 550D will leave some in your budget for extra / good lenses

Good luck with your search and enjoy it

There's several things to take into account here not least of which is in having the same camera as your brother you can both learn from each other without someone saying "oh my camera doesn't have that feature" or " my button isn't there" etc.

Having said that there are better lenses available within your budget than the kit lens with the 550D, you could get the camera shop to do you a package comprising of the 550D body in any of the following packages, which would all come out within budget but with a better lens.

550D body, Tamron 17-50 F2.8 Di LD (none VC version) + third party spare battery and case.

550D, Tamron 28-75 F2.8 + third party spare battery and case

550D, Canon 18-135 IS + third party spare battery and case

550D, Canon 17-85 IS + third party spare battery and case

550D including kit lens + Canon 55-250 IS.

The last three are extending the zoom range over the kit lens, the first two are significantly faster lenses so work better in low light and are both sharper than the canon lenses.

As said don't get yourself too confused, stick with your initial gut reaction to the camera you wanted, its good enough so concentrate on either more or better lenses.

I recently went through this quandry in reverse, I really wanted a 500D +85mm F1.8 and 50mm F1.8 lenses, I found myself getting tempted by the 550D with its kit lens as my budget couldn't stretch to the other lenses with the 550D, I stuck to my guns and don't regret the decision I made at all.
The other thing is the video function?, its just a setting on a dial, its very easy not only to ignore but also to forget its even there.
