I was playing around the other night, thought I'd try some different settings with my camera. For some reason I keep getting this blue area in my photos. What can I do to stop this?

I have never had it myself, but could it be light entering through the viewfinder? Have you tried covering it during long exposures?

Uh, nope. I didn't even realise light could get in and affect it through there.

As the others have said it looks like a light leak. If you cover the viewfinder that should solve it. Like can sometimes get round the edges of the mirror, no biggy to fix
 
I don't want to have to cover the viewfinder on every shot if I can help it, is there any thing I can do to fix it?
 
Id have said its a filter, but if you have none fitted could just be glare from the oncoming lights, as it is directly under the headlight start if you know what I mean, it could be leakage but doubt it, maybe Matt could shed some light on it ( :naughty: no pun intended) I think had it been leakage it would covered a bigger area and not just directly under the oncoming, it looks like some sort of refraction from lens tilt to me with it being rainbow like colours, I'll pm Matt see what he thinks

I'd rather clone one in every dozen shots than cover the viewfinder every time...

forgot to say can you see it through the VF, have a look next time if your eye is against the VF then its not leakage, more likely tilt refraction
 
Could always stick the camera in live view, get someone to hold a torch about where the headlights were and see if if pops up again..
 
Were about were you when taking this, I'm just wondering in the topography of the location is allowing light to shine at the back of the camera, I've done light trails all over the country and never had issues like this, but looking at the location it looks like you could be part way down a hill suggesting that cars that are appoching down the road and then below you may be at a similar level at the bridge you are on and thus causing the issue, have you tried a different location or position and had the same effect? if so there is an outside chance that it's a bit of dirt of dust in the lens but I would think that would be about a million to one chance of that being the cause :shrug:

I was stood on a bridge, but it's a road, a quiet one at that. Not a single car drove past me. It's very wide, so I can't imagine light would come in from behind me. The area was pitch black as well.

Excuse this image, my friend was being a tit, but it has done it here too. Again pitch black, this time, not light anywhere, except his torch.

Can you tell me what bridge you were on and I'll take a quick look on google earth/street view :thumbs: also are you certain that your lens was totally smear free? as that could have been a very basic cause of such an anomaly :thumbs:

something Ive noticed with the last shot its upside down, its refraction through smears or grease on the lens

and i think you should put NSFW in the prefix title now :thumbs:

I never touched the lens, I've just checked it again, it's covered in scratches where I dropped it the other night, but no smears at all.

Okay, I took those photos, left the area and went some where else. Took the 'phallic' photo, left that area and went some where else. Whilst in the third area, my camera fell off of my tripod and landed lens down. I destroyed it after I'd taken the photos. I'm not that silly. :thumbs:

problem solved, always fit a filter, easy to replace than a lens, new lens required, good job its not a dear lens

The lens split in two, no filter is that good. ;)

No, the photo my friend was being an arse in, is the only one where a torch was used, and that was from the front of the camera. The one on the bridge, was dark, except the car lights on the M4.
 
I can't remember off of the top my head, I'm new to this, I just try different things.
 
Right looking at the Exif is shows that you were shooting at a very wide aperture for light trails, and this has blown out that distant headlights, this coupled with the angle that the camera would have been to have it level based on looking at the bridge that you were on causes the blown area and the flare to line up, so think in conjunction with the wide aperture IMO is the cause of the flare :shrug: close the aperture up more and I think that you would have been just fine :thumbs:
