Some pics I took at a very windy, and eventually wet, Nutt's Corner. Still, the crack was good and I was able to test out my new waterproof camera and lens cover. It passed with flying colours!

#1 Sadly, this wee Ford Cosworth mid-engined missile broke a driveshaft at the start of the first heat, and was out of action the rest of the day. It was flying in the practice laps, though...

awesome shots! Very sharp. Is that last one Dennis Biggerstaff?

Thanks, Yvonne. :) I think that is Dennis, but I'm not sure, as several of the cars were 'doubled-up', with 2 drivers sharing them. I must go on to the N.C site and download the entry list.

no.5 for me, great shot

Philip, superb shots so sharp. As you say Ian Millar (red escort) was fantastic to watch all day. Thought he'd have to fit wipers on side windows to see out:clap:
Keep up the good work.
Kevin

Thanks, guys. It's hard to beat MkIIs or G3/4/5s for spectacle! (y)

Yvonne, I've just checked, and it was Dennis and Stuart Biggerstaff driving the ****in Irish Whiskey Scooby. I'm guessing Stuart is Dennis's son.

Edit. I see the swear filter is working well ! :)

Great shots Philip - super panning technique. I was too close with a 300 lens to be able to pan but I would say I have a lot to learn from your shots. What lens were you using? merv:clap:(y)

Very nice, all very sharp and the light looked good too.

Must get up to Nutts some day

Colin

Thanks for the comments, guys.
Merv, I was using my Canon 70-300 IS USM f4-5.6 lens, with an EOS 400D body.

Colin, the light was actually quite poor, as the sun only appeared on a few, all to brief, occurences. It's very frustrating, actually, when you see the difference good light makes to your pics. Mind you, the forecast is quite good for the Gullion Stages rally, near Newry, this weekend.
Maybe we will even have some sun!!! :-()

Philip - was looking on the web for some access details for Gullion ie how do you get to the forest stages, where do you park, timing etc but havent succeeded yet. I see it starts at Newry Town Hall at 9am but I would rather just go to the forest. Have you any information? merv:thinking::thinking:

I most certainly have! :)

If you have an Ordnance Survey map, the location is in grid reference 33-30.

It's about 2-3 miles from Newry.

The info is from this excellent forum (which I am a member of).

http://www.rallyforums.com/forum/index.php

It concetrates on all things Irish Rally related. (North and South) I know most of the togs on there, and they are a great bunch of lads. (y)

I hope I'm not contravening any forum rules by posting this link to their forum. If I am, I can remove the link.

Hope this helps.

Philip.

Many thanks Philip - you're a mine of information. Thats a very useful map. It appears the Camlough and Gullion stages alternate - is that correct? I take it you try to see some of each without madly rushing between them? Where is the easiest place to park - is it the blue 'P' signs or are these public carparks for everyday use? So many questions. Would I be better communicating with you on the rallyforum do you think rather than so publicly on TP? merv:bang::thinking:

Yep, the stages alternate. I think it would have been better if they had the first 2 stages at Camlough, then the first service break and on to the stages 3 and 4 at Big Gullion, etc. This would give us togs and spectators time to move between the 2 stages. As it is, I think I'll stay at Big Gullion, and just move farther up or down the stage after each pass. There are 2 recce runs and four passes over each stage.

As for parking, as far as I can work out, there is a car park near the stage start, as the Big Gullion stage is inside Slieve Gullion Forest Park itself. There is also parking at the service area. You will probably have to park on the road for the Camlough stage. Once you get close to the stages, you will most likely see other cars there, so you could park near them. There will probably be marshalls/officials in the area too, and I'm sure they would only be too happy to point you in the right direction.

Finally, as you suggest, the Rallyforums site would be better to find out more info, as there are competitiors and marshalls on there. Some of the members probably know the area, too. :)

Philip.

Hi Merv was up at Nutts Corner was chatting to Philip, sound bloke and handy man with camera could do worse than to follow his advice:D
Rallyforums top job for info on upcoming events. Best advice is to get out and enjoy the events and dont get to caught up with the photos and miss the fun to be had with the bunch of lads taking photos. Most are very helpful and dont bite if approached with caution:wacky::LOL:
Enjoy the rallying and photography

Kevin

Philip,
Really enjoyed looking at these, great work and some super images.

Have to agree that last three are bang on the money for panning and sharpness!

Thanks for posting,
Pons

Thanks for your kind words, Kevin. I suppose you have to be nice to me until I return your memory-card! ;) I bought a 4 GB Sandisk yesterday, so I shouldn't have to change my card mid-event again!

Thanks, also, Chris. Nutt's Corner is great for panning, as the infield is slightly lower than the track, so you are at a nice level in relation to the cars.

Hi kevin - good to make contact with you. Yes, I have great respect for philip and he is always quick to help and never fails to reply. Maybe I will bump into you guys some day. Hope the weather is reasonable at the weekend as I would like to venture to Gullion and familiarise myself. merv:clap:(y)
