Bit of a long shot but thought I would ask the question.

I live around the corner from RAF Odiham which is the Chinook base in the UK, I was wondering if anyone on here knows some good spots to get some shots of these guys in flight?

Fancy trying something different and as these are on my doorstep...

It's only a little place so must be just around the corner :)

What lens was that taken with? Was hoping for somehting closer as there must be somewhere around the RAF base where you can get the guys coming in or out, just haven't figured out where it is yet :D

I'm also not too far away, and once I've got my new camera sorted I'm hoping to take a trip up there as well. If anyone finds some good places, maybe it would be a good idea to post some maps for all to see?

Just had a call from the folks and meeting up for lunch in a pub around the corner might take a spin out and see what can be found lol...

Will post any findings :D

I don't understand why anyone other than a terrorist would want to take pictures of the RAF.

The same could be said of people who want to take photos of buildings in London etc, some people have an interest in aviation, specifically Military aviation, me personally, as long as it has wings/rotors I'll photograph it whether it be Military or Civil.

I don't understand why a terrorist would want to take pictures of the RAF.

And judging by the response to most of my photo shares on here, most people don't understand why I want to shoot the things I do

I think my favourite omgterrists moment was the tanks at Heathrow debacle; they told us that on the foggiest day of the year terrorists might be trying to, er ... shoot down airliners ... using visually-sighted GTA missiles hahahaha

OF COURSE THEY WERE, TONY. NOW I'M REALLY SCARED! HELP ME! HELP ME!

Aaaaanyway that's totally off topic - how are you getting on with your Chin-ups?

In a similar vein, we used to get a few fly into RAF Northolt (on the outskirts of W London).
Good position could be had over the road from the entrance, very close by.
I worked in the offices and from our carpark you could see the pilots with a 200mm lens.
Lots of other stuff was always flying in and out, large and small.
Probably worth a weekend trip.

What a lovely construcitve post, thanks for that I'll take it on board and remember to shoot other objects in future ;)

Seems the only real vantage point for RAF Odiham is just of the Alton Road. If you drive up with the entrance to your base on the left take the next left turn and theres a big layby on the left hand side. Pull in there and a walk around the field will get you up to a low fence and should get some good shots :D

As it was pretty grim up there today I didn't bother walking around the field, plus I was stuffed from a great lunch at the Barley Mow in Winchfield...

I did drive around the area of the base and found a footpath leading towards the base and had a quick chat with one of the guys from the base who said it leads straight in the base accomodation so no real point for shooting the aircraft, from a brief chat they don't seem to bother with peeps taking photo's.

Will have a look at what I did manage to get and give you an idea of whats possible at 300mm without walking around the field...

They tend to head out toward the longmoor or Aldershot training areas.
I remember when I was Living in Bordon they used to make a hell of a noise overhead.

I now live in Church Crookham, and they are always blatting about overhead.

I 'may' be able to wangle something, mate of mine is with them in support.

I'm with Myky D - who'd want to photograph the RAF?
The Army, now that's different - fine figures of men, square-jawed, steely-eyed dealers of death, all rugged and widswept...but the RAF?
Pfft...

That would be ace :)

Folks will soon be moving to Crookham Village when the house is completed. Can't wait as it's right down on the canal so great for wildlife as a permanent hide of sorts with an Owl House above the garage which can be seen from the house and far enough away not to be noticed by the birds but close enough a decent zoom lens should get some decent shots :)

Ah but rob, dont forget the intrepid soldiers of JHSU, those fine masters of the underslung load!

What's wrong with trying to photograph everything :D We've had numerous posts over the last couple of weeks about houw far would you travel, are you bored of photography etc. As a beginner the more I can get out and shoot the more I can learn, I working on the premise that by increasing the variety of what I shoot the quicker/more I will learn.

Looking at the photo's I've taken I've got more respect for the guys who pop up to Cad West and the like and manage to get the jets nice sharp and crisp as looking at the chinooks which are far slower in comparison, need to be picking peoples brains lol.

If you live in fleet/Church crookham area come to CC-tiles to get all your tileing done as i work for them, and we can talk photgraphy. I live in crondall under the Chinooks flypath to odiham. As i came on to this thread 2 Chinooks were flying over, to late with the camera. While i wright this im waiting for another to fly over to get a pic to post. like buses. Normaly just ignore them, they are so common. If one comes over ill post a pic......................Still waiting.
Only if your a Nikon shooter :D :D :)

LOL wish I'ld klnown about the tiles earlier would have put my folks your way lol, all tiles now ordered and being fitted (Poulters Bridge Cottage if you know it)...

Guess I'm stuffed as a Canon user then :D :D :D

Is that Avatar from Rokes Farm/Millers Ark by chance?

know millers ark well. No thats knobby one of my 2 cockrals. Have 35 or so chickens. Oh sod the tileing been doing it for 35 years, had enough :D
The dark side love you really  promise I still will get a Chinook for you

I need to learn how to shoot them properly lol, will be posting in Transport soon asking for some pointers as didn't get one in focus lol...

Still loads to learn!

To dark now. I know Nikon flashes are good, but not quite that good :lol::lol:

Didn't mean this second lol :D :D

Even around 3pm the light was not superb but had a play, photo's now up lol...

Not looking looking forward to farnbrough with Hilicopters flying through the house. Not a Chinook, there too big to come through our house. I WILL FIND THEM!!

with a D700 there is no 'its too dark'!!
I would put work your way, but we have a man for that sort of thing- well, the MOD do anyway!!

The other option is Deptford Down, up on Salisbury Plain (northwest of Stonehenge); public bridle path (you can park on the north end on the B390 and walk south for about a mile) goes down the west side of a practice landing area used by tri-service helis and even the odd Hercules. It's hit and miss in terms of what will turn up and when, but can yield some great shots as there's not even a fence.

Use this link then switch to OS view, drag the map northeast and it's between the 'P' and 'L' of 'Salisbury Plain'!

An an ex raf person, can I just say we're the sensible service. We send the officers to war and leave the junior ranks safe behind :D

Lasham is a good place to practice aviation photographer, the gliders tend to goa little slower and you can get great views from loads of place.

you want the b3349 odiham to alton road, i work in alton and they fly over that road quite a lot. might be worth just popping down to the main gate and telling them what your doing, then there should,nt be a problem.
