Can someone suggest a solution please.

Running XP with IE8 & OE.
ISP is Virgin.

I had to reinstall XP yesterday and this problem has suddenly appeared.

Mail sent to me with an .exe file attachment does not reach my Inbox.

I can send mail with .exe files attachments and mail with other file types attached function normally.

I have OE set to permit attachments to be saved/opened.

The problem is not a size issue.

That'll be an anti-virus filter somewhere along the chain. Possibly your mail provider is blocking the attachment - are you using virgin for your mail as well?

i thought that OE blocked exe files for some time now..
Maybe - certainly would explain it.

you might want to do the reverse of this - http://www.pc1news.com/how-to-block-executable-attachments-in-outlook-express-1144.html

Thanks, Neil. However the registry string that link refers to does not exist on my setup.

or this - http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/troubleshooting/email/4375/
That one refers to not being able to open attachments, but they are not getting to my inbox.

I'll look at that soon. I had to download a new AVG after XP reinstall so it could be.

Cheers.

No, not using Virgin for mail.
Just tried turing of AVG mail scanner and sent myself a small .exe file - never arrived.

IIRC it's OE that's the culprit - This functionality can be easily changed in Full Office version of outlook, but seem to recall reading somewhere that MSoft, being really helpful didn't expose the option to disable it in OE. Will have a look and see if I can find the article, sure there were some registry keys to chsnge somewhere....

Have to admit though it's probably something I'd leave on. If I want so send (or receive) an exe or other potentially harmful file, I tend to use dropbox, or just ftp it somewhere.

Just a suggestion- but you should never be receiving .exe's via email. Wayyy to easy to get a virus.

I only accept them from a trusted friend. Thoroughly reliable.

Found a way to overcome this. Change the file extension to something like .txt. It can then be sent and renamed, on receipt, to what it should be called.

What happens when one of them gets a virus and automatically sends it to you? Its only a suggestion :)

Great if you could find that article. If not I have the workaround mentioned.
Fully understand the risk of opening .exe files and if it were not for the trusted source I would not touch them.

Might be worth stopping your AVG and trying to send your test.exe.

If it gets through, have a wee try with Avast in place of AVG.

I remember something about Virgin bringing in filtering to block anything with an .exe in it

found it here

Lots of others blocked too

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
