off camera flash or light?

i posted on here afew days ago about my boss getting the pentax kx

he is after i think an of camera flash ( not sure if thats what they are called )

there was another post on here where someone jhad taken pics of buildings , jeeps, caravans ect and he put a light inside the objects with a coloured gel on it and my boss would like to have ago at it.

its just were not sure what to actually look for regarding the flash of is it just a bright light

The pic in your link is a long exposure shot with a flashgun with a coloured gel on it fired inside the building, probably just by the photographer walking around during the exposure pressing the "test" button, rather than a set of wireless triggers, which would be what you'd use for normal off-camera shots.
 
im gonna have to get a flash so i can take portraits of my kids.

do i just get a flash gun that works with brand of camera,
if so what would you suggest for portraits
 
Obviously, a Pentax flash would be first choice, but there are 3rd parties who make compatible flashes that will work with your camera. I know nothing about the Pentax range but I'd look for something that will work in TTL mode (probably all the Pentax ones will) and has a fully rotating head - this is so you can aim the flash head at walls and ceilings to bounce the light and create a more flattering light. Overall power is important to many people but for standard family shots inside it doesn't need to have a nuclear blast rating!!!

If you want to take it off-camera then you need to figure in some wireless triggers and consider that the flash has a manual mode where you can alter the power settings yourself.

This seems to be the cheapest Pentax flash that fits the bill (rotating head, manual mode, TTL):

It does have a wireless mode built-in, which I expect is based around the camera's ppop-up flash triggering the flashgun when it's off camera.

A cheaper option would be the Pentax-fit Jessops 360AFD, you'd have to find a secondhand one though as I don't think Jessops do them any more, but there should be a few kicking around on here if you post a wanted ad (once you can, of course) or, if your budget is a bit more generous Sigma do new flashes in Pentax mount for around £150
