Off camera flash solution - Wired or wireless

Wired or wireless?

I have a Canon 430EX and looking to take it off camera.

Distance doesn't need to be huge, but looking at prices for off shoe cords they are more expensive than I was expecting e.g.

Best part of £30 although could get a light stand too for £8 extra.

Seeing as these are so expensive would it make sense to go for a cheap wireless option like Yongnuo? Would get more range this way although I suspect it would be less reliable.

A plus for the lead would be it supports TTL but using off camera flash would most likely be using manual anyway?

Thoughts and advice will be appreciated.

Hi Phil,

Something like the Yong Nuo RF602's would be your best bet... There are loads about on Amazon for very little money. As you said, once you start shooting with off-camera flash, you'll probably never bother with E-TTL anyway. :)

I've never had any reliability issues with the Yong Nuo's and I don't personally know of anyone who has.

Yep, a pair of Yongnuo RF603s on ebay are around £25. The 603s are newer and use AA batteries in both transmitter and receiver, unlike the 602s, so far easier battery wise.
