off camera flash

can some one point me towards a cheap of camera flash. i have searched but can only see the £80 ones i have seen a few vids on the tube and they say they got some for £30ish are these things still available,

i know it is cheap but at the moment im rather skint so i need as cheap as possible just to get me going

its for a sony a290

If it's for use off-camera then you can use any brand. Thing is, you need to trigger it so you either buy one with a built-in optical slave that your pop-up flash will trigger (or buy a clip-on slave unit) or get yourself a trigger set, more money.

Old Nikon SB24/25/26s have optical slaves built-in; prices start about £40. They have really good power adjustment and good built quality.

As for triggers you can get a cheap Yongnuo trigger set for about £25

Dirt cheap flashes are a bit of a rarity these days because of the popularity of the 'strobist' movement of recent years.

The yongnuo flashes (get in touch with flash in the pan, he's a member on TP and sells them) seem quite popular because they offer manual control and many functions for about £40.

Yongnuo is the name.

YN-460 and 460II have a built-in slave with an S2 mode that will fire successfully off a pop-up flash (it ignores the pre-flash) though the 460II is better in this respect I believe with a repositioned slave cell. Normal slaves are fooled by pop-ups' pre-flash and will fire, but not in sync.

Best way is to get an Yongnuo RF-602 radio trigger - very good and only £25 a set off FITP I think. Then you can use any flash with manual power settings.
 
Yep Yongnuo is what you are after.
I use a YN465 which gives me full ETTL control on camera and when off the camera I fire it in manual mode using a set YN-04 triggers.

Flash and triggers cost me approx £78 inc postage.
