Hi Guys..

im looking at getting an outside flash set up and not sure what to go for...

i am wanting do some outdoor portraits for example like these..

but im not sure on the set up i would would need... regarding flash, tripod, umbrellas and triggers.. i have a nikon d5000;....
 
This might be a good starting point, especially for £40:) Plus it has an optical slave so will fire from either the built-in flash (with the pre-flash disabled, if possible) or via a camera mounted speedlight. Good manual control and well built. No need for triggers with optical, so cheaper :)

If not, have a butchers at the RF-602 triggers, or the new Cactus V5. Cheap, fairly reliable and with easy connectivity thanks to built in hotshoes and tripod sockets.

I mount my flashes on tripods when shooting with bare flash (using Nikon AS-19 flash stands on the tripod), or use standard cold shoes on light stands. Konig make good, cheap stands that you can get off ebay or amazon.

There are loads of light modifiers like brollies and softboxes - pay more, get better quality, but the cheap ones are pretty decent nonetheless.

Velcro is a big help for attaching gels and homemade snoots.

Look up Zack Arias and his one light DVD - superb and he can show exactly what kit you need and how to use it.
 
It's all about budget, and that is heavily dependent on whether you want to retain iTTL or not.

What do want to spend? Couple of hundred quid on some Yongnuo manual flashes and triggers, brollies on stands? Or over a grand on SB900s, Pocket Wizards/Radio Poppers and softboxes?

Nope, bad design the receiver makes the flash sit on top of it and makes it very high so a bit precarious and fragile.

Then say good bye to ever having any spare money EVAR again as you will want more stands, more flashes, more triggers more modifiers more more more.... ;)
 
ill have a look at these roger... richard cheers for advice..

i will be trying for cheap as chips at the moment to see how i get on to practice then once i get the hang of it then i will be spending more money...

i want to get the practice in before may time where i will be pushing for these kinds of shoots with clients..
 
ok so im basically looking for

- maybes 2 flashes (possibly the Yongnuo Manual Flash YN460II that FITP sells)
- 2 umbrellas
- 2 tripods with flash and umbrella clamps
- wireless triggers..

i have tried inboxing FITP to no avial so was just wondering if you guys have see n the above.. im tryign to do this really cheap... if poss under £100..

obviously 2 of each would be a luxury but if i can only get 1 that will do..
