Well, just sold the last of my Canon gear on a well known auction site. 40D, 24-70 F2.8L, 70-200 F4.0L and a 580EX II. The reason? I have a passion for people photos, weddings and portraits and I need (*cough* WANT! *cough*) the D700! Alot of folk I shoot with use Nikon and recently I have enjoyed using them, despite really liking the Canon controls. It was either the D700 or 5D MKII and I settled on the Nikon as I don't need video or prints the size of an aircraft carrier. Wish me luck and I hope to post some more images on here shortly. :)

Good luck

I hope you are getting a lens or two also? The D700 is good, but it still throws up an error without a lens fitted :D

85 f/1.4
24-70 f/2.8
70-200 f/2.8
maybe

Lucky sod!

I have a Canon body and 8 Canon lenses but if I could switch at no cost I'd have the D700 in a flash. It's the camera that I think could most directly replace my old Nikon SLR and I'm still waiting for Canon to make something like it.

Good luck

You have a good point. I am not buying any lenses today as there is a chap coming buying my motorbike tomorrow. A friend is lending me a 24-70 F2.8 for an engagement shoot I have tomorrow, then I will go out and but one and the 70-200 F2.8 .

No, I haven't tried the 5D MKII to be honest, they are both on reserve right now at Jessops at Trafford so I can go play with both. They are also gonna price match for me if need be so getting a reasonable deal too.

"Speaking as an ex-Nikon film SLR owner myself (F801s and F90x), have you tried a 5D mk II?"

Yes, but it hasn't got a built in flash. Plus...it might not have been a scientific test but when I tried my 20D with Sigma 50mm f1.4 against the 5Dii with 24-105(??) (shots taken in a dimly lit room) both me and 5Dii owner preferred the 20D shots.

Without wanting to hijack the thread, could you post them? (in another thread perhaps)

Stating the obvious, but the different lenses may have something to do with it. I'd guess that a 50mm prime would beat the 24-105 hands down for IQ, L or not.

Possibly that is well known to Nikon. I noticed in the manual, when I first opened it, that it said to fit a lens before it went on to describe the various features.

"Without wanting to hijack the thread...."

You might be right. The pictures are long gone I'm afraid as they were just to compare the results and not keepers. The general comment from the 5Dii owner was along the line of the 20D looked more "natural."

I'm trying to arrange another comparison and if I can I'll save the results.
