The missus and I are off to Scarborough for a break for most of next week.

I'm fairly familiar with Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay, but where else can we go that just erm, happen to be ideal photo opportunities? ;)

I'm mainly into landscapes but would welcome a chance to step outside my zone for a while. What are the iconic pictures to take around the area, and where might you try for something a bit different?

We're staying on the North Shore. Will it be worth taking the tripod for some early morning or evening atmospherics?

Isn't it goth weekend in Whitby next weekend? Should be a good time to take my new nifty out for a wander!

Thanks in advance,
:) Steve

The castle is always a stunning place to go.

However, go down to the spa complex on the south shore. There is the old victorian promonade there. Its gorgeous but usually covered in graffiti which sucks.

Still, always worth checking out.

Then there is the lighthouse too. The Grand Hotel which has been a mainstay on the sea front for many years, The sealife centre in Scalby and Peasholm Park is a lovely area for a walk.

Think that gives you a few to check out. i was up there this weekend.

The goth weekend is AMAZING. So many pretty ladies dressed up in the victorian wear :)
Not sure if its this weekend or next though

Goth weekend will give you plenty of opportunities, 29th to the 31st, it is very good natured and some of the folk go to amazing effort with their outfits. The only main issue will be finding somewhere to park, it can get very busy.

At Scarborough the North Bay has some nice views across to the castle which is illuminated at night. If you come around to the South Bay there are some nice views to the South towards Cayton Bay. The South Cliff looking towards the castle gives some nice views, particularly at dusk. YOu can drive up Olivers Mount to the top where there is a little tea rooms, next to the war memorial there is a lookout with panoramic views across the town.

Going towards Whitby you've got the North Yorkshire Moors and its railway, around Goathland there is some amazing scenery, if you like moorland then a run to Blakey gives some amazing sunsets and scenery and also one of the best pubs ever, The Lion.

Have a look at my flickr, all the shots of Scarborough are geotagged so you can get an idea of positions.

I live in Scarborough, feel free to drop me a line through my profile or mark@specialistcarsltd.co.uk if there is anything I can do to help.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks everyone, should keep me busy if not necessarily in the good books! ;o)
I'll take a look at your Flickr later Mark. Websense at work doesn't like the farm5 server.

Cheers,
Steve

Is there a good, really scruffy biker's pub on the North Shore?
Somewhere it goes dead quiet if a suit walks in or someone asks if they do food?
A jukebox full of classic rock, a few real ales on the bar and a fridge full of Newky?
Black walls and a graffiti chalk board in the bogs?

Is there such a home from home?

Runswick Bay, just north of Sandsend is worthy of a couple of hours if you have your own transport.

If you do decide on Runswick Bay, then Staithes, about a mile or 2 further on is an absolute MUST.
