Hi all,

My father in law has offered me his 1ds MKii as he is upgrading which I'm definitely taking him up on as he doesn't want anything for it and its barely been used. Only thing is I have a 15-85 mm efs les which I use a lot on my 30d, but obviously won't be able to use on the full frame body.

Am I right in thinking the 24-105mm f/4 would be roughly equivalent?

I am keeping the 30d as its lighter and smaller for hiking, but would I be better off keeping the 15-85mm or using the 24-105 on both cameras? I'd rather be able to trade in the 15-85 if I can use one lens on both bodies.

Thanks,

Dom

Roughly yes, 24-70mm f2.8 might be better but heavier and no IS or the new 24-70mm f2.8 from Tamron. All are good

So would I able to trade n my current lens and just whichever new one for everything?

Lucky blighter!

24-105 is a fine "Good enough" lens, to do much better you'd really need primes. Full frame will show up all of its short comings though, a crop sensor wont.
If you can afford it, I'd keep the Ef-s lens for the Ef-s camera. Smaller, lighter, little trade in value. Be interesting to compare the two "Systems".

Does taking his free gift mean you have to "Keep" his daughter? Might be better to buy:-)

I got a 24-105 as the kit lens to a 5D2 and it's a great lens. I used it all the time when I got it and used it regularly on a 7D that I had at the same time. It's a great walkaround lens for both FF and crop and until I got a 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 MkII pairing it was used a lot. The f2.8 pair gets used more now but I wouldn't part with the 24-105 as it's a damn good all rounder and a great backup for me.

Absolutely, the 24-105 is a really great all round lens on FF bodies, use it a lot on my 1 Dx
Why not pick up one 2nd hand on the forum?
George.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look at the 2nd hand ones, see what's around.
